Lacey’s medical update:Stool update & yeast infection update

Posted by: akamine2525 on: February 9, 2010

A few weeks ago,we took Lacey to see Dr Kaya for an update on her UTI presumably from Solid Gold Just a Wee Bit(Lots of grains)and we were told she now has a yeast infection. We just got her off the Wellness Super5Mix Small Breed which had too much fish and caused soft stools.around the same time we took her back to Dr Kaya and he prescribed her Ketoconazole 1/8 tablet for 32 days.Meanwhile while she was taking it every day(with a struggle)she was also having soft stools for about a week. After a week of this we called up Dr Kaya to see if it could be the medicine and we switched it to every other day.The days she didn’t take her medicine her stools were better:More firm, consistent, good color. The days she did take it her stools became more soft but a little more firm with rice per Dr Kaya.
When we did call up Dr Kaya today(February 8)he said it is possible if the yeast infection is gone we could stop her medicine rather than continue for the rest of the days.We do have an appt with Dr Kaya on Wednesday February 10 2010 at 830am(HST) to see how she is doing with her yeast infection.Meanwhile,so far on Halo’s there has been no medical complications YET and we are hoping that there will be none!

Dr Kaya calls back on Ketoconazole side effects for Lacey

Posted by: akamine2525 on: February 4, 2010

I called Dr Kaya’s office reporting that she may be having side effects from her medicine.I explained that I tried her on the Wellness Super5Mix Small Breed and she had soft bowels on it after about a 4 day period then I took her off on Monday January 28? which is the same day she went in for a check up with Dr Kaya.Since then I told Dr Kaya I stopped her on the Small Breed and she’s back to her regular diet.Since we have given her the medicine she has had only one good stool.Dr Kaya told us to try give her the Ketoconazole 1/8 tablet every other day and break her diet into four small meals(with her 1/8 cup that she gets daily so divide into four small meals)with rice.

Lacey just made a bowel and it does seem more firm but still soft looking. It wasn’t splattered like yesterday(Wednesday) so that’s a step forward in the right direction for her.

We also got the Wellness Super5Mix Complete Health Chicken Recipe yesterday but I don’t want the results to conflict so I am holding off on that for a while. Also going to try not giving her any canned food to see if that also makes a difference.I know normally it would make her bowels slightly soft but that’s not our focus though.

“Best Diet for your dog:Dr Kaya’s point of view”

Posted by: akamine2525 on: February 3, 2010

This is coming from our vet,Dr Kaya, who treats Lacey and this is what he tells us to look for regarding a healthy diet for a dog:
Activity Level
Volume of stool
Hair Coat
Weight Maintenance
Absence of signs ie upset stomach, soft stool, vomiting, passing a lot of gas

Cooking for your pet is the best thing you can do but it involves a lot of effort.Meals need to be nutritionally balanced to meet the needs of your dog.
In other words,Dr Kaya doesn’t push us to feed certain foods such as commercial dog brands but as long your pet is doing good on a food and you’re comfortable feeding it he’s okay with it.

Ketoconazole side effects for Lacey

Posted by: akamine2525 on: February 3, 2010

Looks like we will have to call Dr Kaya after all. While it does seem to be working for Lacey her stools are still on the soft side. Not as bad as on Super5Mix but still not too good.I didn’t call on Monday because on Monday morning it seemed like her stools were getting better but this evening even when she does get dry and canned food it’s not that soft. We’ll defiantly call Dr Kaya tomorrow to see what he says.It can’t be the Super5Mix because she’s been eating mostly Halo’s and Merrick’s Canned food…An update will follow as soon as we get a response from Dr Kaya sometime tomorrow.

Side Effects to Ketoconazole:A call to Dr Kaya on Monday Morning

Posted by: akamine2525 on: January 31, 2010

Recently we took Lacey off the Super5Mix Small Breed and she’s been eating Halo’s for the most part. She does get people food, canned food etc but what’s puzzling me is that even though she’s been off the Small Breed for almost 4 days I would think her bowels would get better(Much firmer and not so much soft, loose formed bowels)but although her bowels has gotten better from when she was on the Small Breed it’s not up to regular standards. One thing that did cross my mind was it could be the Ketoconazole she was having side effects to.For right now she does have to take the medicine but I am going to call up VCA just to let them know what’s going on and if they want us to keep her on the Ketoconazole or try something else. It’s really their call but I think it’s better to let them know how she’s doing with the medicine.

Today in my email we got a coupon from Halo’s for $5 off if we shop online by Feb 28.What I don’t get though is how did they know that I was promoting Halo’s to other people??Interesting.I don’t mind the coupons but just a interesting thought…

VCA University Animal Hospital over DiVentus

Posted by: akamine2525 on: January 31, 2010

We chose VCA over DiVentus because VCA has Lacey’s medical records so in case something is wrong the staff can take care of it right away.I have nothing against DiVentus though. If there ever came a time that VCA doesn’t have room to board Lacey we will probably go with DiVentus. At least at VCA she knows some of the staff and doctos so they will be familiar to her and she won’t be scared.
