Lacey uses back paws to itch neck, smells like urine

My mom brought to my attention recently that after Lacey makes big puddles of pee on her puppy pad which is usually in the morning after she hold it for about 12 hours, that her pee gets on the back areas of her legs so that it gets soaked into her fur…She uses her back paws to itch her neck..As for why she holds her pee for 12 hours,I have no idea why she does that…This is just as much as information for me and in the future but for other owners too who may have similiar issues…

We will be ordering Lace somethings from carealotpets & possibly onlynaturalpet…and we will be ordering these Pefect Coat Bath Wipes for her so that each time she makes in the morning she will get wiped with one of the bath/grooming wipes. We will also be ordering some new detangler/matting spray called BioGroom Coat Polish. We’ll see how these work.

Next week we will be picking up more shampoo for her.Not sure what brand/smell it will be but it will be a natural flea repelling brand depending what store we go to.

Making an appointment with Dr Kaya for Lacey…

Not that anything is wrong..She’s as healthy as she possibly could be..Probably the best she’s been in about 18 months since we had her….after spending more than 2,000.00 on vet bills….

We’re just going to make an appt with Dr Kaya so we can figure out this quarantine from California to Hawaii & what we have to do before we leave…One thing we noticed is when we checked on the Department of Agriculture site for the microchip # I noticed that her microchip # was not on there..It should be..She had had her Rabies in December 8 2010 and January 8 2011 and her mircochip was renewed for another year back in February 2011…That’s another question for Dr Kaya…No flea meds for Lacey.I will only say something on this if Dr Kaya or the vet staff at VCA ask.

Lacey will no longer get vaccinations

From this month on,Lacey will no longer get vaccinated and if needed in the future we will consult a holistic vet..To see why click here

If she does get fleas we will probably use Flea Powder from Only Natural Pet or something similar to that effect

New dog food for Lacey

Lacey will be starting and trying the fish protein starting on Sunday. Both formulas are fairly limited to fish & potatoes.Since there are limited dry food with a limited ingredient we’ve chosen Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Fish,Earthborn Holistic Ocean Fusion,Solid Gold Barking At The Moon(Beef & fish with herbs) and Taste of The Wild Pacific Ocean. What we’re doing is sticking to the limited grain/grain free diet and seeking which protein reduces her itchings the most or if all proteins are good in results we’ll just switch up[ the protein every few months. Our neighbor’s dog Brownie is finishing up the remaining of Halo’s Wild Salmon,Taste of The Wild High Prairie and Earthborn Holistic Primitive Natural.Lacey has been on chicken protein since last July.Chicken is and was mixed in majority of the low and high quality dry food that she ate since then.

Counting Calories in Diet Pet Food

Dog and cat owners who buy diet pet foods may be feeding their animals more calories than they realize.

That’s because the calorie counts of pet foods marketed for weight control vary widely, according to research by the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. The study also found that feeding instructions on diet pet foods are often inaccurate and may even lead to weight gain in some animals.

The study, published in The Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, counted the calories in 93 commercial pet foods marketed for weight control, including 44 dog foods and 49 cat foods.

The amount of calories in just one cup of dry diet food varied widely. Depending on the product, one cup of dry dog food had 217 to 440 calories. For cats, a cup of diet food contained 235 to 480 calories. That means a pet owner accustomed to serving one cup of dog food could inadvertently add more than 200 calories a day to their pet’s food simply by switching brands.

The calories in a can of dog or cat food also covered a wide range. For dogs, a can of diet food contained 189 to 398 calories. For cats, a can of diet food had 78 to 172 calories.

Feeding recommendations also varied. For some brands, the suggested serving sizes amounted to feeding about 25 percent fewer calories than the pet’s resting energy requirement, whereas recommendations from other labels amounted to 50 percent more calories than the animal’s resting energy needs. And half the foods studied also contained more calories by weight than typically allowed under federal guidelines for the marketing of light and low-calorie pet foods.

The study authors noted that for most of the foods studied, pets would not lose weight and might even gain weight if pet owners followed the feeding instructions on the label.

The lesson for pet owners is to talk to their veterinarian about the specific daily calories needs of a pet that is overweight. If the vet recommends a calorie-controlled food, discuss the best options and read the label to determine calories counts. If the feeding instructions on the label don’t match the recommended calories suggested by your vet, talk to him or her about adjusting the serving size or switching foods.

Tips:Don’t be lazy to measure out your dog or cats food.If you don’t do this already start now!Once you know how much a X breed should eat a day overall feed it that much.I’d weigh the dog or cat monthly as well.

04012010:Suspician of UTI:Day 2

After a day of taking meds Lacey is already showing signs that she’s feeling better.Energy level is back.Although she’s more hungry she still eats about the same, close to a half cup a day.She also has soft bowels after taking Clavamox but since she gets dry food this time around the soft bowels are not as severe. She’s more happy and confident. Not laying around a lot.Went walking but didn’t over do it.Waits & takes meds after she eats. When she’s ill and has dry food it is always with meat in it to encourage her to eat but when she’s not sick or taking meds at regulated times she just gets one brand of dry food measured and eats when she’s hungry till she’s full. She’s doing much better except not sure if it’s a side effect but there seems to be possibly devleoping a rash to clavamox.I will keep a close eye on it & if it gets worse I might ring Dr Kaya on Monday.

TOTW Samples review by Lacey

Nothing can describe Lacey’s reaction to TOTW except the words:AWESOME,AWESOME,AWESOME!!!!!
Lacey LOVES LOVES LOVES IT without a doubt!!!
This morning we had gotten a package from TOTW.We were waiting on it for over a week already..Last year’s response with Chicken Soup was a much quicker response but she didn’t care for it a lot..The response for Halo’s was a lot better than Chicken Soup. That was a different blog though.

When my mom brought in the box Lacey was sniffing at it already. I opened up the box to find 2 trail packages of the Wetland Formula & 2 trial packages of the High Prairie Formula.I opened up the duck formula(Wetland) and here is Lacey just begging for more…more…and more…..She took it in almost less than half a second and gulped it down in a matter of seconds..Figuring she loves duck I decided to try TOTW after hearing so many raving reviews on dogster. We can find it locally…but we are holding off on halo’s for a bit 2 see how she’ll do on totw before we put it in her rotation.once i know how she does on the totw formulas we may or may not add it to her rotation.she’ll always go back on halo’s though..

So now we don’t have to get Nature’s Best and we won’t even bother with Nature’s Variety Duck Formula.
Her diet consists of Halo’s Spot’s Stew Wholesome Chicken,Halo’s Spot’s Stew Wild Salmon,TOTW Wetlands,TOTW High Prairie, and Merricks can food a few times a year.I plan on keeping her on this combination unless ingredients change with the companies and we’ll know that when she starts to refuse the food for days at a time..

Lacey refuses Natural Balance Dry Food Sample as well as can food

Today we went to Kalihi Pet to get Lacey some chew toys.We did find one by Petrodex. The only thing I don’t like about that one is that there’s poultry digest but otherwise I feel safe with it.Lacey also got a new tshirt that says “Daddy’s Girl!” and we also got a sample of the Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Fish to see her reaction. Not surprisingly she absolutely refused just like the can food. She took a sniff and turned her nose upwards.Thought maybe the piece was too big so I broke it into a smaller size.Same reaction.Sniff..and she turns her nose to the side upwards!

Natural Balance is the very first brand that she’s refused both dry & can food.Usually if she does not take it one way she’ll eat the other but in the case of Natural Balance she has refused both dry & can!
