In the next few weeks Lacey will be transitioning to two new proteins(see the New Foods for Lacey Blog) as she’s almost done with Acana Grasslands. She’s got 1.5 pounds left so that would go down pretty fast.Right now,I have got her trying Acana Wild Prairie, will have her try Acana Pacifica/Orijen Adult(80-20) to see how she does/likes it but really I think she’ll do fine regardless.Those(Acana/Orijen)would be the easiest to find for us as it’s right in town but I’d really like to see if we can find the Earthborn Holistic Coastal Coast & Solid Gold Sun Dancer first at a couple other feed stores in town.Otherwise we’ll opt for Acana/Orijen or just do Nature’s Variety Instinct Chicken Formula & the Rabbit formula which we’d have to go to Kailua because while we can Special Order from Naturally Pet it is one of the more expensive priced dog foods(for a 4.4 pound bag)we have ever paid for that was even made in the USA.Acana/Orijen didn’t even cost ~$20.Acana/Orijen typically go for about ~$15-18.00 for a 5.5 pound bag.But then again Rabbit is not a protein Lacey’s had before.IF it were something like Chicken/Beef/Turkey/Lamb/Duck,a protein she’s had previously that’s not really a big deal for us but a new protein not knowing how she’ll do that’s when we try to get local if possible.Although we try to buy locally as much as possible unless we can not find it on our island(Oahu)then we consider special order.
Though with Lacey I don’t make her eat one specific one.She can choose to favor both proteins, eat it weekly/every other day switch proteins/daily whatever she wants as long as she eats something but as she gets older around 7-11 years old she won’t have that freedom with raw so I let her get a little finicky now.Once we get the new proteins she’ll finish up Acana Grasslands before opening the new bags.
As for the Nature’s Variety Instinct Beef & Lamb we thought we were going to sell it but..(see the Nature’s Variety Instinct Beef & Lamb Review) feeding raw may be coming sooner than we expected.

Dry Dog Food by Brands
***Please note that all the dry dog foods listed here are mostly 2 grains,1 grain or grain free.On occasion you might find one that is similar to three grains but not exclusively three grains. If you are looking for three grains or higher such as Wellness Super5Mix for an example I don’t have it posted but if your dog is sensitive to grains like Lacey you will probably find a decent food on this list that might work but remember what works for one dog might not work for another. You just have to keep trying!***
There are so many to list that I’ve made a copy for myself so if you want the nutrition facts email me or leave a comment on this particular blog and I will send it to you.

Just Got Word that Acana is coming out with another grain free dog food!
So,we were looking on Dogster & one of the Dogster members said that they are coming out with another grain free dog food(Acana & Orijen are made by Champion Pet in Canada) called Ranchlands. No word on when it will be released but it will be beef, bison & lamb! It’s defiantly one we will have to get a trial bag of in the future when it comes out!I think Lacey will do well on it..Now only if they can make the Orijen 6Fish & Acana Pacifica with a little less fish Lacey would have it made..All one company all the time..for dry food anyways! It’s very possible that Orijen/Acana may be her next brand to stick with consistently throughout her life if they keep this up!We still have trial bags of Orijen Puppy/Orijen Adult/and Orijen Reigonal Red in case she refuses Nature’s Variety Instinct or Acana Grasslands.
Orijen Adult:Chicken based
Orijen Puppy:Chicken based
Orijen 6 Fish:Fish based(heavy in fish)

Orijen Formula Changes
Orijen has changed their formulas by using mixed tocopherols to preserve their food instead of vitamin E with citric acid.A few of the ingredients have changed in order, some formulas have a less amount of fish than before, others it’s about the same except some ingredients were added or removed or moved further down the list.overall, everything is about the same. One of these days before the end of the year I’ll post it on Lacey’s site.

More good results on Champion Pet Foods
Whether it is Orijen or Acana Lacey seems to be responding well to Orijen Adult and Acana Grasslands. On the Orijen reigonal red energy was much higher though the amount of calories were .5 calories higher. She also didn’t like that gamey pork(boar).Looking at her in weight I have to say not only she is calmer and more relaxed but she’s still eating about the same ~1/4 c-1/2 cup a day, getting the same amount of walks as on her previous foods but her weight has actually went down from 7.6-7.8(on previous grain free dry dog foods) to 7.2-7.4 in only about 2 weeks of eating Champion Pet Foods. She hasn’t been 7.2 in a long time.On average her weight was 7.6-7.8 on a month to month basis.Last month at one point was also about 7.2(after she started eating Champion Pet Foods)-7.6.
For sure,we’ll be using Orijen/Acana whenever she’s on certain proteins. Results are to good to pass up.Even TOTW Sierra Mountain gives about the same results are Orijen/Acana.
Orijen/Acana sells out at Naturally Pet on Oahu!
It is very apparent that Orijen/Acana is getting very good sales from the pet population on the island of Oahu.Couple weeks ago we went to pick up more can food & found that Naturally Pet has Orijen/Acana available there. When we picked up Orijen Adult trial bag there were still quite a bit on the shelf.Today there was bigger bags(5.5 pounds)but most of the trial bags were GONE!So,there will be another shipment next week.We picked up a few more samples/trials being Orijen Reigonal Red & Orijen Puppy. We’re going to try all the trial bags of each formula and see if we can get her regulated on some if not all with an accurate poop. That really impressed me,that Orijen/Acana sales are going that great on Oahu!
So far no future plans to switch off of Orijen/Acana
Everything outweighs the benefits from fur to tear stains….The only way we’d switch off Orijen/Acana is if there’s a major recall with many ill animals from a certain ingredient whatever that may be,recall after recall like every few years or one of the usa companies buy it out but even then as long as ingredients stayed the same and results continue we’d probably stick with it till the ingredients changed. Most foods from these brands she SHOULD be able to eat. However before we introduce Orijen 6 Fish in future months we’d probably be wise to try her on Acana Pacifica first as protein is lower and there is a little less fish than in Orijen 6 Fish.If she does”ok” on that Orijen 6 Fish may work.Otherwise we have more than enough to choose from hopefully .But if she didn’t do good on a few trials we might add a third brand likely to be Nature’s Variety Instinct Beef Meal & the Nature’s Variety Rabbit.Reason being there was one recall and is close enough to what she is eating on Orijen/Acana.The only reason we’d add one more brand is that likely on both(Orijen/Acana)she’d do decent on Orijen Adult, good on Reigonal Red,Acana Wild Prairie & Acana Grassland the flavors of all being Chicken & Lamb.I am sure she’ll eventually get tired of these flavors and would like something a little different.More than likely she won’t be able to eat Orijen 6 Fish & Acana Pacifica at a “decent” amount which probably won’t be 1/8 cup even if that.Once the trial bags are done we’ll probably try her on the NV Instinct Beef & the Rabbit formulas then Acana Wild Prairie/Orijen Reigonal Red,then Acana Grassland/Orijen Adult then back to NV.
Finally stable on Orijen!
Lacey is finally stable on Orijen. We started out with a 1/4 cup by itself. However it produced small but very soft like(liquidy). So we tried her at 1/16 cup by itself. It produced small but hard poop like a rock(see previous blogs). We upped it to 1/8 cup.The same as 1/16 cup.Our next step was to keep it at 1/8cup(nothing higher than that due to fish amount) and try add 1/8 cup of can food(Merricks)..Well it turned out better than I expected…Good, firm poop..Nothing hard like a rock.So on Orijen/Acana dry foods she will more than likely take 1/8 cup of any dry food from Orijen/Acana (Orijen/Acana)+ 1/8 cup can food. What kept us going with Orijen and not stopping quickly like other brands in the past(Taste of the wild, earthborn, solid gold barking at the moon etc)was truthfully her excitement and eagerness to eat…I have never seen her so excited and eager to eat any brand of dry food with the exception of Halo’s.Typically, her other dry foods will literally sit out for hours at a time before she will eat it.With Orijen/Acana she’s so excited and eager that she will gulp it down in like 10 minutes.Currently she’s only eating Orijen or till she loses interest.
Lace is on her third night of Orijen which is so far the longest she’s been on any dry food without losing interest or refusing to eat after the second day so she’s doing really good about eating it all in less than 15 minutes of being left out.Other brands would sit out for as long as 30-40 minutes before she’d eat the dry/can food.So far I’ve noticed absolutely no tear stains around her eyes for at least the past 2 days and itching is becoming less or it seems like it.Fur is becoming whiter.Plans are to keep her on Orijen for a while to see if our observations are accurate on tear stains and itching….Check back for updates
Trying to maintain an amount of Orijen/Acana to feed
So today even though Lace had 1/4 cup of Orijen last not stool was almost nothing but very soft like.Still as eager as Lacey is with eating Orijen I’d like to see if we can maintain at least 1/8c-3/16 cup not quite 1/4 cup on these brands.Out of all the foods she’s been on she’s always wanted Halo’s over all the rest and not once has she shown so much interest in her food to this extent anyways. So,what I am doing is not giving her any other brand of dry food or can food or treats just Orijen/Acana & table food. We’re starting off at 1/16c then will go to 1/8cup then 3/16cup.I am also observing her bowels to see how she does on each amount for a few days.If all goes well we’ll add can food starting with 1/16 c till we get to 3/16 cups of Orijen + 1/16 cup, then 1/8c then 3/16c then 1/4 cup for every amount to see how she does on it.If it’s gotten worse we’ll ad pumpkin and see how that goes.If all fails hopefully not then we’ll have to stick with her current brands till something else comes along.Cross your fingers for us & check back for updates. Pros I have noticed though is apparently small poops and when it comes to people food she’s just not interested.Thinking it’s very nutrition dense. The other thing I am seeing is that although Orijen Adult has a good amount of chicken because of all the fish in the food it’s a need to decrease the amount that she eats a day by at least half.Ordinarily we start with 1/4 cup and if she handles 1/4 cup well she can eat that specific dry food up to 1/2 cup alone or mixed with no issues. If there are issues we go backwards from 1/4cup.
This morning she got 1/16 cup(13 kibbles) and we’ll see how things go.
Update october 24 2010:Lace went on a walk and her poop was good.Very firm and TINY like the size of an eraser on a pencil but slightly bigger than that.I think she’ll more than likely be good at 1/8 cup a day OR 1/8 cup per time she eats ONLY AFTER MAKING A POOP BEFORE SHE GETS ANOTHER 1/8c.In a few days we’ll try it with can food and see how it goes.
