Ordered Lacey’s products

Today we got Lacey a new collar as my dad suggested that the smell was from her collar that smelled like urine so we got her a East Side Collection Butterfly Garden Bright Pink Collar. She gets a new collar about every 15 months or so.

We also ordered Lacey’s Petz Life Oral Gel Salmon from Care A Lot Pets,Dogipot Litter Bags Count 200 from Care A Lot Pets and the Earthbath Grooming Wipes..

We also ordered Lacey’s BioSpot Coat Finisher from Cherrybrook.com.It was about $20.00 with shipping.

Lacey uses back paws to itch neck, smells like urine

My mom brought to my attention recently that after Lacey makes big puddles of pee on her puppy pad which is usually in the morning after she hold it for about 12 hours, that her pee gets on the back areas of her legs so that it gets soaked into her fur…She uses her back paws to itch her neck..As for why she holds her pee for 12 hours,I have no idea why she does that…This is just as much as information for me and in the future but for other owners too who may have similiar issues…

We will be ordering Lace somethings from carealotpets & possibly onlynaturalpet…and we will be ordering these Pefect Coat Bath Wipes for her so that each time she makes in the morning she will get wiped with one of the bath/grooming wipes. We will also be ordering some new detangler/matting spray called BioGroom Coat Polish. We’ll see how these work.

Next week we will be picking up more shampoo for her.Not sure what brand/smell it will be but it will be a natural flea repelling brand depending what store we go to.

Lacey gets new nail clippers

Hello Fellow Readers of Lacey’s Blog:
Sorry we have not posted anything about her in a while. She is doing overall well with very minor health concerns..Most of which was treated at home…She will be getting new nail clippers today & maybe a new treat & more can food…The only other news we have is that we have not seen or heard Brownie bark for a while so we are not sure what’s going on..Haven’t left food out in a while…Otherwise no real news to report on Lacey Girl!
Update:Originally we were going to get her can food(Wellness@Kalihi Pets was going for 3.25 per can..We were going to pick up about 5-7 cans but could easily by other brands under 3.00 X12 easily for about 30-40.00 at Naturally Pet)..We did get her a new pair of clippers called u groom nail scissors. We still have the puppy clippers put away for the next puppy in the years ahead but I think this one can be used for all dogs at all life stages.
We did get her new treats called Real Meat Treats(Beef flavored)
Here are a few brands we have used successfully for Lacey that are freeze dried, dehydrated or mostly meat with no fruits/veggies for the most part…These treats typically run about 10.99-14.99 even for small treats in a 2-4 oz container.

Stella & Chewy’s Freeze Dried Treats
Bravo Treats
Real Meat treats
Primal Treats
Old West treats
Those are a few that stand out in my mind that we have used.On ocassion I buy her treats with veggies/fruits like Sojo or Solid Gold treats etc but not consistantly. Most of the time it’s mostly meaty treats.

Is feeding raw meat twice a week benefiting Lacey’s teeth??

I’ve been feeding Lacey raw meat about twice a week for almost the past month now..She seems like she’s starting to enjoy it & over the past two weeks I have been giving her some raw this past week I have noticed her teeth has been extremely white no matter what diet she ate…She is still getting mostly dry food and can food in addition to raw meat couple times a week..Prior to this, she would eat mostly dry food, can food and mostly cooked meat and she’d still get tarter build up…..Am considering instead of buying another bag of Nature’s Variety when she runs out we’ll get her a couple choices of nature’s variety frozen raw in addition to raw meat and see how that goes then go back to dry food(Nature’s Variety) depending how much she likes frozen raw.
I do try to stick natural, organic raw meat for her when I do give her raw meat…If it’s a small portion of cooked meat like a small amount from fast food or cooked meat that’s not too bad but if it is raw meat for her to have as a meal I am a lot more careful of the type we buy her.So far we’ve used is 50th state poultry & foster farms..It also depends what is on sale & what she seems to like…Next up for Lacey is to try eating chicken drumsticks with the bone!

Lacey will no longer get vaccinations

From this month on,Lacey will no longer get vaccinated and if needed in the future we will consult a holistic vet..To see why click here

If she does get fleas we will probably use Flea Powder from Only Natural Pet or something similar to that effect

Evangers Can Food Review

Terrible rating from Lacey & her owner. For Lacey she would sniff it but won’t even lick it.For her owner, not all cans have the kcal listed so there is no way a owner can figure out exactly how many calories their dog is getting. It depends on the type of Evangers Can Food.It takes a lot more can food just to get a 1/4cup flat.So in a 12oz can(Evangers@$3.05 per can there is maybe about 14 servings if you calculate at 1/8cup for a toy breed),a 13.2oz can such as Merricks has about 20 servings at about $2.30 a can. They always have calories listed therefore making it easier knowing how many kcal a dog is getting. We’re never purchasing Evangers Dog Food again.

Types of Dry Food and Lacey’s reactions

So so far we know Lace can’t have 3 grains or higher, can’t have a lot of duck/lamb and fish though some fish based food(dry) is okay as long as it’s not heavily based ex are Wellness Simple Solutions Rice & Salmon,Halo’s Wild Salmon..Earthborn Ocean Fusion…
Meat based food seems more appealing and she does best on.Grain Free is also good but we have to watch the fish/lamb/duck based foods. She likes chicken, beef, bison, vension, turkey the best.We will be selling the Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish and TOTW Pacific Stream.Next time we buy Halo’s we are defiantly keeping the receipt in case the change of ingredients DOES affect her otherwise we NEED to hunt down another dry food that’s high quality which she will eat fairly regularly.

Counting Calories in Diet Pet Food

Dog and cat owners who buy diet pet foods may be feeding their animals more calories than they realize.

That’s because the calorie counts of pet foods marketed for weight control vary widely, according to research by the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. The study also found that feeding instructions on diet pet foods are often inaccurate and may even lead to weight gain in some animals.

The study, published in The Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, counted the calories in 93 commercial pet foods marketed for weight control, including 44 dog foods and 49 cat foods.

The amount of calories in just one cup of dry diet food varied widely. Depending on the product, one cup of dry dog food had 217 to 440 calories. For cats, a cup of diet food contained 235 to 480 calories. That means a pet owner accustomed to serving one cup of dog food could inadvertently add more than 200 calories a day to their pet’s food simply by switching brands.

The calories in a can of dog or cat food also covered a wide range. For dogs, a can of diet food contained 189 to 398 calories. For cats, a can of diet food had 78 to 172 calories.

Feeding recommendations also varied. For some brands, the suggested serving sizes amounted to feeding about 25 percent fewer calories than the pet’s resting energy requirement, whereas recommendations from other labels amounted to 50 percent more calories than the animal’s resting energy needs. And half the foods studied also contained more calories by weight than typically allowed under federal guidelines for the marketing of light and low-calorie pet foods.

The study authors noted that for most of the foods studied, pets would not lose weight and might even gain weight if pet owners followed the feeding instructions on the label.

The lesson for pet owners is to talk to their veterinarian about the specific daily calories needs of a pet that is overweight. If the vet recommends a calorie-controlled food, discuss the best options and read the label to determine calories counts. If the feeding instructions on the label don’t match the recommended calories suggested by your vet, talk to him or her about adjusting the serving size or switching foods.

Tips:Don’t be lazy to measure out your dog or cats food.If you don’t do this already start now!Once you know how much a X breed should eat a day overall feed it that much.I’d weigh the dog or cat monthly as well.

New changes to Nutro!

We are excited to let the readers who come to Lacey’s site that new changes are coming to Nutro…We are excited to try their new grain free formula which will hopefully be at Kalihi Pets for us to try next year(2011) in the Hawaiian Islands.I am excited to say that corn gluten meal and Vitamin K3 will be taken out of the ingredients which were 1 of 2 reasons Lacey hasn’t tried it yet and that it has 3 grains in it.Read the post on dogster!
