Lacey update
At 30 weeks old Lacey got her first heat. For the past few days we were trying to figure out what was wrong with her as she didn’t eat a lot of her food.In fact, she ate less than what she normally eats <1/8 cup.She would snack here and there but wouldn't eat as much. Also noticed her personality was there but somewhat subdued.About a week ago,we noticed that she was licking her vulva a lot so I posted questions on Dogster asking about this and we thought it was a UTI,Yeast Infection,Dirt or possibly getting into heat.We noticed her vulva was black around the area. We thought it was blood so after we wiped her vulva we took hydrogen peroxide with a qtip to see if it was blood but it wasn't.Dirt? We gave her a bath and it's cleaner now but when we looked closer at the vulva we noticed some swelling and immediatly after that we knew she was in heat. Now we know why she's been the way she has been the past few days..Next month we will ask Dr Kaya at VCA Animal Hospital about her being spayed.By then she would have just turned 8 months old.We may have to get a pack of diapers to put on her duing this time so she doesn't spot around the house. We'd hate to confine her again…..
Aside from Lacey starting her heat….she has graduated in 3 1/2 months from putting tape all around her mat for potty,to about an inch of tape on each corner of her mat,to only 2 corners needing tape,to no tape at all as of Saturday night!
Also reintroducing Lacey to the NurtoMax Puppy Biscuits and she is getting used to the Milkbone..Today(saturday) she ate 2 half biscuits =1 biscuit of milkbone.I put it inside her KONG and she is obviously eating it more now..
Tricks wise…She's learning how to lay down, not running outside, sit, sit & stay meaning of don't move, standing on her hind legs, sort of identifying the word vienna sausage and the can of vienna sausage, vaccum…
Eating wise:The past two days since Thursday she wouldn't eat a lot…I tried giving her hamburger today(Saturday)but she just ate the hamburger..but when I gave her some of the mcdonald chicken that is when she ate both-her food +pieces of chicken. She was waiting for the chicken. This dog will do anything for chicken even if it means to go hungry!
Lacey gets a refill on her Revolution
Today we are going to get Lacey a refill for her fleas and ticks.Lacey has been doing very well with her potty training, begging, eating on her own and following commands. She catches on quickly and uses her common sense.
Lacey Begging Patterns:
No Begging:Laying down on the floor of the room usually if she knows she did not eat her own food
Pleading(Please, please):Pawing owner’s pants(On two paws standing and front two paws paws at the owner)
Done, all done,no more:May try to paw but if you keep firm she will eventually go to No Begging mode.
Lacey does not run out of the house if the door is open:
Lacey will make a sound to let you know that the door is not supposed to be open and it’s to be shut.
Lacey & The Bathroom:
When a person is doing hygeine and leaves the bathroom door open even slightly she knows not to go inside but when you turn off the water she’ll poke her nose inside then come on inside to greet you.
Lacey & Her Dog Treats:
She will respond to the sound of the bag.Owner kneeling down on the knees and clicking the treat on the floor she will usually come get it quickly with a wagging of her tail then take it to the living room mid way and eat her treat.
Lacey’s becoming a big girl
Lacey has been doing really well lately. She makes on the mat majority of the time and hardly has had any accidents within the past few days. She’s 22 weeks old and has finally graduated potty training even while she has full run of the house to play in.We are so proud of her that she’s done so well..She also likes fried rice though she can’t have green onions but she enjoys the rice(white riceĀ w/shoyu mixed with eggs that’s scrambled and spam).Another favorite of hers is playing with empty bottles and chasing them espescially if there’s food in the bottle she likes to try chase it out of the bottle.
Lacey and her mats
Although Lacey may have her full freedom back she is still not potty trained to her best but she is trained well enough to feel that she has more space to run around. While she was confined she was using one mat(prior to that there were mats all around the house..up to 4 mats with many accidents) and now that she’s got the full house to run in we are back to 4 mats but there is aplus to this too:Her training is much better and her accidents get less by the day. She’s 5 and a half months so that might make a difference too.
Akamines:Our Lacey graduates from her corner to full time freedom!
Tonight our beautiful maltipoo Lacey has graduated from being in a confined area to having full freedom to run around the house. She still has some accidents but it is getting less by the day and the length of time she can hold her bowel movement and pipi is also getting longer as well.Congrats Lacey!Go Lacey,Go!
Lacey’s Cleansing Solution
We use 1/2 water and 1/2 clorox to get the area to be disinfected; Lacey has also graduated to sleeping outside from her confining area. She still does have mstakes but it is not as often as before.I make sure I clean it up right away when she does make a mistake..
Lacey is doing well with her freedom…
Today she has been out of confinement for much of the day and night till it got dark.By surprise, she did not make any mistakes at all on where to do her business to say the very least.I think giving her freedom is actually helping her because she seems a lot happier and always wagging her little tail.Lacey always comes running to the door when my parents come home…As soon as the garage door is heard she waddles and quickly patiently waits by the door till the door is opened by my parents…
Lacey speaks”I am transitioning to earning full freedom!”
Today we took Lacey out of her confinement area and started giving her more freedom to run around which is in the living room & it’s bigger than the dining area which is where she was confined to….We “doggy proofed”the living room by putting mats where she should do her business then took her out…She was so happy for the freedom that she was running around for minutes at a time. She had maybe two accidents at the most. The first time Lacey had an accident my dad put her in the “confinement” area but I told my dad she’s going to see that as punishment.Sure enough, she did.She cried and did whimper but more crying..I told my dad she needs to learn the ropes by taking her out a few hours a day then put her in the confinement area since she’s not used to the area since she hasn’t had freedom for so long…It’s just like teaching a baby. You have to be patient…But one thing we learned is she’s able to hold her pipi a lot longer. The last time we took her out for freedom she’d make about 5 mistakes all over but not today! So,we are slowly transitioning her.Take her out during the day and in the confinement area at night. She’s responding pretty well
From August 5,2009:Lacey only needs one mat and not three?
I think Lacey was telling the family that she only needed one mat and not three to help her potty training. The reason I say that is she was pulling the tape off the second and third mats after we had put tape on the mats to hold it down because she was pulling it away from its’ spot.So far she’s doing good with only one mat.Am thinking is because the first mat we had it in a corner(upper left of the dining room)from the beginning.Just like her food:We started the food with puppy food+IAMS+Science Diet then I started giving her puppy food +IAMS without Science Diet but she would eat less.Lacey is too smart for a maltipoo but it’s good she tells us what she needs..
