Lacey’s Dental Cleaning at Cocojor!

Lacey Girl was a champ today when she went to Cocojor to get her teeth cleaned! While going in to the store, she started wagging her tail right off the bat!She saw the vet on site who told me she does not have a heart murmur(He didn’t hear one so that’s good to hear!),then she went back with the vet tech….15 minutes later Lacey Girl emerges with the vet tech who said in his own words after being asked “How was she?” and his response was “She was fantastic! No whimpers!”

She came out very calmly as if nothing has ever happened! We paid $150.00 up front,no tax…She was excited to go about her day after, she had a smile on her face, wagging her tail and very excited to play and pick up her delicious treat from Kentucky Fried Chicken! In 6 months she will go back for another cleaning!

Lacey has her dental cleaning today

Today Lacey Girl has her dental cleaning at Cocojor at 1015am(HST).It should be interesting to see how she will do.Check back to see how she did!

Lacey’s teeth cleaning

Lacey has her first anesthesia free dental cleaning by K9 Dental Services on February 29 2012 at 1015am(HST) at Cocojor. Will cost $150.00 for the cleaning and wellness check.

Lacey’s last Dental Cleaning was on January 25 2011 at VCA University Hospital with Dr John Kaya

More info on K9 Dental Service

From what I understand the price ranges from about $150 – 200 at the highest would be my guess and that includes a wellness check up and the dental cleaning. Also there is a vet that travels with the guy(scott blanchard who is the vet tech that does the cleanings)and his name is Dr Eugene Pei.There is also antibiotics that is given before the cleanings.Seems like most dogs do fine with the cleanings.Don’t have much more information at the moment but as time goes on & as Lacey gets her teeth cleaned we’ll give an update if we would recommend it.

I prefer that Lacey does not have antibiotics or anesthesia but I guess you can’t have it both ways unless you feed raw food full time.Having her have antibiotics before instead of after is definatly a preferance because if she has to take antibiotics after the cleaning such as at VCA it is almost a guarantee that she’d have some type of side effect but once every six months is not too bad.If your dog is sensitive to meds like Lacey is I’d recommend you bring a list of meds that your dog is sensitive to.I plan to do that for Lacey so they are aware of what she can’t have.

K9 Dental Service

For those who are interested in anesthesia free dental cleaning for their dogs & live in Hawaii which by the way is also throughout the US(I think). The guy who does the dental cleaning has been doing so for 20 years in California and 5 years in Hawaii. At this time I don’t know how often he comes to Hawaii but for those who are in town the next dates for dental cleaning for your dog(s)is March 4th at Calvin & Susie or Feburary 29th at Cocojor. The guy(whose name I don’t know yet)has 100K cases under his belt that he’s done in the past 20 years so he’s very successful doing so.The lady you can contact here in Hawaii…her name is Donna and you can get in touch with her at 923-7692.We need to see what my upcoming schedule will be like before we can set up a day & time to call Donna back with more information.Am excited to see how Lacey Girl will respond and how well they can do the treatment.Check back for more info later

Lacey passed her titer

Today when we check the Hawaii Quarantine website we found that Lacey Girl did pass her titer for Rabies and would not be eligible til August 6 2011 BUT we are not planning on putting Frontline on her anyways so to us..it’s nothing…Just a waste of $$$ down the drain..
Edit:Dr Kaya called this morning to tell us that Lacey’s titer did come back & immunity is VERY HIGH,a +3.1467 or something like that…so that was good to know just for future reference..

ClinTabs 1 Tab every 12 hours causing Lacey to have pastey bowels & straining update from Dr Kaya

Dr Kaya called back and said that we could do 1/2 tablet(12.5 mg of 25 mg) every 12 hours or we could just stop it but the purpose of the antibiotic is that we don’t want any infection to start up in the gums. We’ll be keeping an close eye on her gums, teeth, tarter build up pretty much weekly so it’s defiantly something we’re going to monitor pretty much all the time till we find something that will work. We’ve been giving her dog biscuits those hard treats after she eats so we’ll see how this goes…

Next Natural Dental Gel we’ll try is TropiClean

which is sold at PetCo.Once Lace is done with PetzLife Oral Gel we’ll get the TropiClean. We’re also going to try buy her more “biscuit” like treats so she has to crunch it and not the soft treats. Not sure it’ll help but hey it’s worth a shot. Also checked Hill’s Prescription Diet T/D and have found that in a AAHA magazine that these two ingredients L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate & Pyridoxine Hydrochloride should help with tarter build up but…MOST foods have this already or at least one of them so I don’t know what exactly is the point of this specific oral diet that Hill’s is promoting. If we can get this figured out by January 25th 2012 that will be really wonderful if we can prevent her from undergoing Dental Cleaning & preventing a cost of ~$400.00
I bolded polyphosphate because according to an AAHA magzine it’s supposed to help bin minerals in your pet’s saliva so that it is not available to develop tarter or plaque. If you google the specific word you will find that almost every dry or can food has at least one of the two listen in the ingredients of cheap & high quality foods. Most of the ingredients are basically corn & chicken and knowing Lacey, how she can tell the difference between good and bad dry foods it’d be extremely difficult to get her to eat anything like grocery store dog food.

Likely Lacey had a side effect to ClinTabs

It is very likely that Lacey had a reaction to ClinTabs. There are several ways a person could tell. One is when she eats at least an 1/8 cup of any dry food she should poop a decent one by the following day.On certain can foods depending how much she eats it can be soft but easy to wash off,good/firm or slightly soft but not like diarrhea.Another way is if she eats 1/4 cup of dry/can it should be good/firm with possible very slight softness. Also she usually makes her poops anywhere between the first 5 minutes to the first 30 minutes of a walk.On ClinTabs/Clindamycin she had very pastey like poops and difficult to wash off & also straining quite a bit.Dr Lee Loy still didn’t call back but we’ll stop by VCA in the morning anyways as we’re heading to Manoa anyways.Meanwhile,we have not been giving her any ClinTabs.

This year we’re really going to be focusing on her teeth just trying different methods and see what works best prior to her next annual/healthwork in January 2012.As well as keeping her on a clean healthslate on limited grains(2,1,grain free).I don’t plan on changing her diet as far as grains go too much.We do use some can food with three grains but not often.

Lacey finally takes a bowel

So,since Lace came back from VCA on January 25th we’ve seen very pastely like bowels then the evening was good. However though her appetite is good, and drinking water on the 26th she made no bowels.Today, the 27th she did make some, pastey like but has been straining to make.So we called VCA who said Dr Kaya is not in today so Dr Lee Loy(another dr at VCA Lacey has seen before)will call us back. One of the common side effects Lacey has on most meds are diarrhea and so it’s difficult to put her on meds.
