So so far we know Lace can’t have 3 grains or higher, can’t have a lot of duck/lamb and fish though some fish based food(dry) is okay as long as it’s not heavily based ex are Wellness Simple Solutions Rice & Salmon,Halo’s Wild Salmon..Earthborn Ocean Fusion…
Meat based food seems more appealing and she does best on.Grain Free is also good but we have to watch the fish/lamb/duck based foods. She likes chicken, beef, bison, vension, turkey the best.We will be selling the Natural Balance Sweet Potato and Fish and TOTW Pacific Stream.Next time we buy Halo’s we are defiantly keeping the receipt in case the change of ingredients DOES affect her otherwise we NEED to hunt down another dry food that’s high quality which she will eat fairly regularly.
Category Archives: Lacey & fish in dog food
Dry Food,Raw Food, and can food…the list never seems to end…
So on dry food food Lacey obviously can’t have corn,by products, artificial colors/syrups/dyes etc..it can’t have beet/beet pulp if possible due to small breeds tear stains, she can’t have a lot of fish in any formula due to sensitivity causing soft bowels, she can’t have a lot of carob even though it’s not chocolate because it causes her to have soft bowels..kibble has to be small or she won’t touch it,ingredient list should have a good variety of meat, fruit, veggies…those with limited ingredients such as Natural Balance Can Food she will refuse it all…absolute no food with apple cider vinegar she will refuse it all…
Addiction is out because one formula has brewer’s yeast, other reasons are “limited ingredients” not enough variety for her taste but the dry food might be ok.
Sojo is out because some formulas contain carob and she’s got sensitive issues with too much carob in her diet.
Something like The Honest Kitchen Preference
We’re going to see if Nature’s Variety freeze dried is still being sold at Naturally Pet.I have seen the dry food, can food & treats but not the freeze dried since the NV Recall. If they don’t have that we’ll have to go with Primal Pet since more stores in town have it than Nature’s Variety.I’d like to use them because it’s still freeze dried till she will accept it more on a regular basis.I will look into a few others but we may end up getting one of these brands Sojo Complete Dog Food,Addiction La Porchetta or Salmon Bleu or Viva La Vension of the dry foods that they have,The Honest Kitchen Verve or Thrive or Preference,Primal(any flavor),Nature’s Variety Freeze Dried Lamb or Vension-depending how Lacey does on the lamb maybe we could try the frozen lamb if Naturally Pet still sells NV Raw Food…If they do we might even try Frozen Bison,Lamb and maybe Rabbit from Nature’s Variety. It’s really what her tummy can handle & how her stools are that will help me decide what to give her. After the end of March we’ll look for a new brand for her.Depending how she reacts to the freeze dried then the frozen we might even try the kibble but the can food is out since she tried both brands & didn’t like it for the can food anyways..I am also considering a Solid Gold Grain Free Barking at the moon but if she likes the NV freeze dried/frozen/maybe kibble we might be able to try one of the grain free kibbles they have to offer….We’ll have to ask around for other dog owner’s opinions before any decisions are made on that…
Lacey’s medical update:Stool update & yeast infection update
A few weeks ago,we took Lacey to see Dr Kaya for an update on her UTI presumably from Solid Gold Just a Wee Bit(Lots of grains)and we were told she now has a yeast infection. We just got her off the Wellness Super5Mix Small Breed which had too much fish and caused soft stools.around the same time we took her back to Dr Kaya and he prescribed her Ketoconazole 1/8 tablet for 32 days.Meanwhile while she was taking it every day(with a struggle)she was also having soft stools for about a week. After a week of this we called up Dr Kaya to see if it could be the medicine and we switched it to every other day.The days she didn’t take her medicine her stools were better:More firm, consistent, good color. The days she did take it her stools became more soft but a little more firm with rice per Dr Kaya.
When we did call up Dr Kaya today(February 8)he said it is possible if the yeast infection is gone we could stop her medicine rather than continue for the rest of the days.We do have an appt with Dr Kaya on Wednesday February 10 2010 at 830am(HST) to see how she is doing with her yeast infection.Meanwhile,so far on Halo’s there has been no medical complications YET and we are hoping that there will be none!
Lacey’s possible sensitivity to Wellness Super5Mix Small Breed
Last year I blogged that it was too much sweet potatoes that was in the Super5Mix Small Breed but now I take that back. She’s done fine with other brands of dog food that had sweet potatoes so I doubt that’s the reason.
Just like with Solid Gold Berry Balance it’s weird that she had soft bowels on it.When I give her dried cranberries she does good with her bowels but I never tried giving her directly blueberries.I did notice that it is the second ingredient on the Berry Balance which means there’s quite a bit of Blueberries in it.Exactly how many I am not sure but for Lacey it must be “quite a bit”.Her dry foods does have blueberries as well as fish and she seems to show no signs of sensitivity prior to giving it to her “full” without transition.
Wellness Super5Mix Small Breed Change of diet..again….
We gave our Wellness Super5Mix Small Breed to my aunty to give to her co-workers at work because I seriously doubt Lacey’s bowels are going to get better on the Small Breed but I don’t want to give up hope on using Wellness’ products for her yet until we have tried literally every option Wellness has to offer us before we try Castor & Pollux lines of dog food. While I am fairly optimistic that Castor & Pollux will 90% agree with her I’d like to give Wellness more than one chance if by any means even if it takes a year to try every dry food line that they have before we come across something that works.Meanwhile,I am going to calll Wellness to see what they suggest we try next for Lacey.Otherwise depending on what they say I am thinking of trying the Lamb,Barley & Salmon Meal next. But,we’ll see what Wellness has to say tomorrow. In the mean time Lacey is back on Halo’s 100% by itself with nothing else added at the moment.I hope to try add something else to the mixture soon.
Buying Raw Dog Food for the first time & another dry dog food
Tomorrow we will be buying raw dog food for the very first time and are looking for only the best. One thing that I am looking for in any brand of dog food that is not involved in any recalls should not have a lot of grains, should include Lactobacillus acidophilus or a fermentation of it in their dog food for all products and can not have any beet pulp due to possible tearing in the eyes(especially maltese and smaller dogs). Also should not include any garlic or onions.IF there is it’s off the list.I know some dog owners are okay with this such as in Earthborn but I’m not.If it’s on the forbidden list for dogs I will not give in.Onions once in a great while but I try to take off majority of the onions or if it’s at the least of the list in human food.To me having Lactobacillus acidophilus in dog food & should be included if not mandatory that all companies producing dog & cat food should have it in their dog food as it is important to help the dog fight off infections and bad bacteria.
If Lacey does like Raw I plan on feeding her Dry & Raw separately of course..Raw possibly at night and dry at lunch.Canned maybe on occasion. But once again,Lacey needs at least two different brands of dry food which is why I think she stopped eating Halo’s for a while. When I put out the Earthborn which does have garlic–she did take a few bites–(and the only other one she can eat due to SG Just a wee bit has lots of grains).Of course, too much fish too is an issue for Lacey(see previous blogs) but things like lamb, buffalo, duck etc is okay with her..So,I really have to look carefully at the ingredients to be sure of that and we’re not just spending money but she’ll actually eat it…
What brands we’ll end up picking up?Honestly,I am not sure yet but we’ll have an update later tomorrow(saturday)
Note to self:Lacey doesn’t like Instinct can dog food by Nature’s Variety which is grain free.As well as Natural Balance.
Lacey WILL eat fish but…
there has to be more meat flavor than fish. For an ex, part of a Wellness canned food ingredients list:Deboned Chicken, Chicken Broth, Chicken Liver, Whitefish, Ground Barley, Sweet Potatoes, Carrots, Flaxseed…She will eat but if it’s something like a list of ingredients such as(also wellness):Ocean Whitefish, Fish Broth, Ground Barley, Sweet Potatoes, Carrots(she won’t touch it)..
So the ingredients HAS to be more meaty with chicken, beef, duck overruling the fish ingredients otherwise she’s less likely to eat it..something for me to keep in mind and thought I’d post it for future references…
OMD!Lacey doesn’t like fish!
Oh My Dog!My dog doesn’t like fish!I can’t believe it!The last time I gave her fish as a ingrediant in her canned food she ate it but the past few days she won’t tolerate it at all! When I tried to give her Halo’s Salmon she’d turn her head away even the Wellness Whitefish & Sweet Potato but when I gave her turkey & sweet potato(Wellness) she ate it!So glad we found that out today before we bought her any more dry food, canned food that has fish in it!Now when I look for recipes for her canned and dry food it can not have fish at all UNLESS it’s cooked like salmon.Otherwise she won’t eat any fish!
