Dry Dog Food by Brands

***Please note that all the dry dog foods listed here are mostly 2 grains,1 grain or grain free.On occasion you might find one that is similar to three grains but not exclusively three grains. If you are looking for three grains or higher such as Wellness Super5Mix for an example I don’t have it posted but if your dog is sensitive to grains like Lacey you will probably find a decent food on this list that might work but remember what works for one dog might not work for another. You just have to keep trying!***

We are very excited to say that Orijen & Acana has finally came to Oahu!

For a while we’ve been wanting to try Orijen & Acana by Champion Pet Food. While I’ve heard nothing but positive feedback from many dog owners it was one that was not yet on our island to try so we couldn’t try it.Lucky for us when we went today to pick up more can food for Lacey I looked around Naturally Pet like always to see what’s new.One thing I found was there was no more samples to try and pick up but I also found Orijen & Acana. There were big bags not sure of the size in weight going for close to $20 and small bag less than a pound going for $2.90.With the excitement I felt I just had to pick up a bag of Orijen. There was one for Acana too but we didn’t get it this time.Still I looked online at every single flavor of Orijen & Acana and both brands are very promising for Lacey. There is about average of 2 grains in majority of the formulas,1 grain in some and grain free for the rest. Some are “quite” fishy which means Lacey would take an average of 1/8 cup at a time vs 1/4 cup if she’s eating chicken, bison etc. We’ll have an update later on how she does on Orijen and her current ranking of foods.Check back for an update.
Update October 23 2010:There is no doubt in my mind or Lacey’s mind that she prefers Orijen to Halo’s!I placed one piece of Orijen & 1 piece of Halo’s side by side. She took a sniff at Orijen then a sniff at Halo’s.Another sniff at Orijen, quick sniff at Halo’s.A few more sniffs back and forth and she ate it(Orijen)without hesitation. There is no doubt that Orijen/Acana will be one of our main brands.
Updated brands for Lacey
Orijen/Acana(Both are fairly grain free 2,1 and none in all formulas from both brands)
Taste of the Wild
Wellness Simple Solutions
If there are ever issues with these above we’d go in this order
Earthborn Holistic Primitive Natural
Earthborn Holistic Ocean Fusion
Solid Gold Barking At The Moon
Merricks Before Grain
Blue Buffalo Wilderness/Blue Buffalo Basics
Nature’s Variety Instinct
Natural Balance LID
NOW! from Pet Curean Pets is finally available at Natually Pet..Not that Lacey needs to try it anytime soon but it’s on our list to try if we ever need to
Lacey is eating Orijen as I type.

Purina buys Waggin Train

I am sad to hear that waggin train is being bought out by Purina(Nestle) and that Lacey can no longer enjoy their treats. For the longest time she was enjoying their treats in addition to several other treats so she was not getting Waggin Train all the time.Still,it saddens us that Purina has bought them out and I(her owner) don’t have enough trust that the quality will remain the same enough to purchase again. As well as Natura Pet has also recently been bought out by P&G earlier this year.Although many still have good results I’d like to see that it doesn’t change for at least two year(2013) before I try to purchase any of these brands by Natura(P&G).With dog food companies going downhill, not to mention there’s rumors that Merrick is next(another possibly devastating decision to probably switch off Merricks dry/can in the near future),Lacey may eventually have to be fed raw in the near future….It’s getting really tough on making decisions for her food/treats and tough decisions will be made in the near future. Not a pretty though.

Here’s the article on Purina buying Waggin Train
St. Louis-based Nestlé Purina PetCare is beefing up its dog treat offerings.

Purina’s parent company, Swiss-based Nestlé, announced Friday that it is buying Waggin’ Train from private equity firm VMG Partners, headquartered in San Francisco and Los Angeles, for an undisclosed amount. The deal is set to close by the end of the month.

The Waggin’ Train line of meat jerky treats, chews and dental bones for dogs are made of chicken, duck, or beef.

Purina’s sells dog treats under its Beggin’ Strips, Moist & Meaty and Busy brands. The Waggin’ Train acquisition will boost Purina’s portfolio to include dental bones and snacks designed to help clean dogs’ teeth.

Purina will operate Waggin’ Train as a subsidiary that will report to Terry Block, Purina’s president of pet food, North America, said spokesman Keith Schopp. Waggin’ Train has 60 employees at its base in Anderson, S.C.

Waggin’ Train has grown its sales 30 percent annually for the past three years, and had $200 million in sales for the 12 months that ended in June.

“Importantly, this acquisition will fill a gap in our dog treat product portfolio, will provide a new growth platform and bring new consumers to the Nestlé Purina business,” W. Patrick McGinnis, CEO of Nestlé Purina PetCare, said in a statement.

Purina’s only other subsidiary is the PurinaCare pet insurance business, based in San Antonio.

Nestle Purina PetCare’s sales were up 2 percent for the first half of the year to $6.5 billion, compared to $6.4 billion in the first six months of 2009.
P&G buys out Natura Pet
Proctor & Gamble (PG) announced this week the acquisition of Natura Pet Products, a privately held company that produces holistic and natural pet foods. The price tag of the deal was not disclosed. Natura’s lines will join P&G’s other pet food brands like Iams and Eukanuba.

When it comes to strategy, Proctor & Gamble (PG) focuses on leading global brands and markets that are under-served. The opportunities must also be enormous. For example, P&G has a 20% share of the global house care market ($200 billion), 5% share of consumer health care ($240 billion) and 13% of beauty and grooming ($300 billion).

P&G’s pet division is still fairly small, accounting for only $747 million of the $19.2 billion in revenues reported in the latest quarter. Moreover, the business has been lagging recently, leaving some puzzled about this week’s acquisition. Yet, the sector does look promising. This is especially the case with premium brands, and Natura certainly has a strong offering. Its main lines include Innova, Evo, California Natural, Healthwise, Mother Nature and Karma.

A Search for the Healthiest Pet Food

Many people consider their pets as a part of the family. As a result, it is not uncommon for pet owners to buy top-of-the-line pet foods.

Back in 1992, John and Ann Rademakers and Peter Atkins saw this as an opportunity and founded Natura Pet Products in Santa Clara, Calif. Their goal was to develop the “healthiest pet food in the world.” They consulted with veterinarians, breeders and nutritionists and used top-quality ingredients like USDA-inspected turkey, lamb, chicken, whole grain rice, vegetables and Grade A dairy products for their pet formulas. With so many ordinary pet foods on the market, the holistic and organic products from Natura definitely stand out.

Natura currently has a small footprint in the pet market, mostly selling through specialty stores and veterinarians. P&G should be able to effectively distribute Natura’s poducts through its extensive system.

Merricks to be sold at PetCo

Merricks is going to be sold at PetCo as of October 2010 which means that they had to “downgrade” some of their formulas to take out canola oil & replacing it with animal fat & adding 3 types of yeast. We don’t feed Merricks Dry Food at least not the gourmet entrees dry food anyways but were considering their Before Grain line so I don’t think it applies to us but for those who do feed the Gourmet Entree dry food beware of changes in stools.

Balancing grains & grain free feedings

Most people know that Lacey has started recently on Blue Buffalo & in the past we’ve had issues with grain heavy food. We’ve looked at Blue Buffalo for certain choices of food that she may be able to eat but when we got to PetCo we didn’t see what we were looking for so we picked up the Blue Buffalo Small Breed.Although I knew it did have some grains I picked one up because we drove all the way to Pearl City so we should pick up something so it’s not a “waste of time/gas”.I was going to do this several different ways with her dry food not to mention we’re trying to get her on mostly very low grains to grain free can food too.
The first way I was going to do this was switch out the brands/flavors every time she ate but I thought if I did it this way we couldn’t focus on the new brands…Later I was going to do exclusively BB & TOTW…But..I was talking to my mom and it seemed she was concerned about the amount of grains in the BB,however energy & bowels are also very good on it…One thing I remembered with grain free is as long as she doesn’t regurgitate the food we’re good with grain free so really it doesn’t matter when or what brand of grain free I introduce we’re good. She started grain free(Earthborn back in December 2009 & we’ve had no issues). The way I decided to go with my mom’s concern in mind was to do the usual amount(1/8-3/8 daily)and make 80-85% of her dry food very low grains & grain free with about 15% being moderate grains. Not to mention she will have can food available at lunch/dinner,also low grains-grain free.Out of 21 meals of dry food times 4 weeks=84 meals/month..more on another post.. a week only 3 would be BB.The other 18 meals would be Halo’s,TOTW,Earthborn…If we do good on this rotation with very little(3 meals per week of BB Small Breed) and no health issues we can choose from many types of BB..Her food would go something like this BB,Halo’s Wild Salmon,Halo’s Wholesome Chicken,TOTW,S&C Freeze Dried Chicken,Earthborn,Merricks then
Halo’s Wild Salmon,Halo’s Wholesome Chicken,TOTW,S&C Freeze Dried Chicken,Earthborn,Blue Buffalo.

AND I couldn’t give the BB Small Breed to the neighbor’s dog because on the BB small breed bag it says for dogs up to 30 pounds so Lacey would have to finish the bag

Canidae ALS

We got Lace some samples from naturally pet but she didn’t eat it.like w/natural balance dry/can food & any dry/can food w/limited ingredients.i’d switch her over to 100% grain free if she ate it as well as her Halo’s!Her stool is excellent on TOTW even w/can food.Halo’s is low in grains…eats it close to a daily basis..medically it helps a lot…both Halo/s & TOTW has good variety ingredients which she’s faithful to…So far we tried Science Diet,IAMS,Beneful,Chicken Soup for the pet lover’s soul, prarie, instinct, stella & chewy, solid gold just a wee bit, wellness, canidae, halo’s(current),earthborn(current),totw(current),nature’s best(refused after once),natural balance(refuses can/dry),merricks(will eat sometimes, loves the can food),primal raw,thk ..when we are in pearl city i plan on trying a few different flavors from blue buffalo to see if she’ll eat it..

Halo’s Spot’s Stew Wild Salmon

Lacey has just given Halo’s Spot’s Stew Wild Salmon her maltipoo approval on how she likes the “new” food!We just got it in the mail this morning and when I took it out of the box for her to try she wouldn’t take it but when my dad tried she did eat one kibble.I tried to hand feed it to her but she wouldn’t have it.So,I did it the other way where I place her food in her bottle to introduce her to the “new” food. After I did that she ate one whole 1/8 cup of Wild Salmon! She also took a bit of it in her crate tray too!At least we know that Halo’s Spot’s Stew Wild Salmon has gotten her approval!A few more flavors if Halo’s should ever introduce you can bet that we will defiantly give it a try for Lacey!Whatever flavor it is Wholesome Chicken or Wild Salmon she will most likely eat it!Thank Goodness we found Halo’s!Now we switch up her proteins almost every meal every day.We start out with Halo’s Wholesome Chicken, then SG Just a Wee Bit (Bison)MIXED with Earthborn Holistic Primitive Natural(Turkey),then we give her Halo’s Wild Salmon.Once a week she gets Merricks Can Food(any flavor)on Saturdays.Mean while,we also use Stella & Chewy as a supplement with any of her dry foods.I break up a small amount into her kibble and she will usually eat that as well.Lacey’s review on Halo’s Spot’s Stew Wild Salmon for finicky eaters…Give it a try!Your dog(if finicky) might thank you!

Taking up some of Lacey’s food

Yesterday morning(Midnight or slightly after midnight HST)Lacey has told me she was hungry–roaming around the kitchen, looking for anything she can find that eatable–so I opened her up some Merricks’ Turducken and she ended up eating about 3/8 cups of Turducken which is about 2 times the normal amount. If she didn’t stop on her own after the 3//8 cup I was going to put away the Turducken anyways since she can’t have more than half cup per day + she had some for dinner the night before(Monday night) so already that was about 1/2 cup right there(altogether).Yesterday(Tuesday)we limited the amount of table food she had to very little compared to normally. This evening(Tuesday evening)I gave her 3 (2-3 inch pieces cut into three slices). Then later in the evening(about 7pm)she was asking for more FOOD!It was then I decided to take her weight to see what she weighed. She weight about 8.4 pounds which is more than she should. She was not however overweight for her size but still more than we’d like to see(anywhere from 7.0 at the lowest, though usually 7.4 to 8.0 is ideal for her)so she was begging for table food but we stood our ground.I think part of it could be that up where we live it’s been cold so she’s not been very active.I didn’t think it would affect her weight but apparently it has since she’s not as active compared to when it’s nice & sunny. So,I have taken up most of her bottles that contain her halo’s and stella & chewy.I always know how much is in each one since I always measure it out before putting them into her bottles. We are also not going to give her can food for at least the next week when I retake her weight.Providing it’s sunny out I will allow her to have more can & table food but meanwhile she will have to get used to less table food, less treats(3 per day so every 8 hours)and more dry food.I will switch it out with her Solid Gold that she does eat sometimes I’ve found & her Halo’s.Whenever I feed Solid Gold Just a Wee Bit since it does not have L.Acid I always end up mixing some Earthborn Primitive Natural in it together since it has L.Acid in the ingredients. She’s not a fan of Earthborn but she will eat it.Also Earthborn Primitive Natural is Turkey,Whitefish & Chicken.Solid Gold Just a Wee Bit is Bison & Whitefish mostly. We would try the other flavors of earthborn but it is mostly chicken & chicken is one of the main ingredients in her Halo’s Spot’s Stew Wholesome Chicken & one of the primary ingredients in Earthborn Primitive Natural.
