Lacey update:Excercise and dog food

I have made little doggie kits ready so when we go walking/running twice a day I am ready for when and if Lacey goes poop.Since we don’t buy little doggie bags,I took a small ziploc bag + 2 sheets of paper towel folded it in half and cut it then I fold it twice and slide it in the bag. Now,we’re ready to go..I’ve also started to measure Lacey’s dog food and canned dog food into ziploc bags.I measure each bag has 1/4 cup of canned dog food stored(result:1/8 for two days..1/8+1/8=1/4) and 1/8 of Halo’s & Solid Gold mixed together. After we finish SG we’ll look for a different brand just to be safe.I also label the package with a permanent marker so I know what’s in the bag & I don’t confuse it with other brands.

As for what Lacey’s been up to:She loves to go walking and running at least twice a day.In the afternoon and usually after dinner(after she gets some of her table food treats. Not a lot as I am cutting back on it quite a bit except when it comes to vienna sausage, eggs and ramen noodles). She enjoys being the neighborhood watch dog..When we go walking or running she’ll stop and look around, sniff the ground to be sure that the neighborhood is safe. She even watches some people get out of their care.Enjoys meeting other dogs and neighbors in the neighborhood.Everyone just loves seeing Lacey!Lacey also enjoys going up and down the steps several times and playing in the grass rolling over(typical doggie behavior for the outdoors.:))
Overall,Lacey is doing very well as she enters adulthood in her pup life.

A trip to Natrually Pet!

On a trip to Natrually Pet recently we bought enough treats to value about $40 which should last a while.I try to look for the treats that’s at a good price but has a lot of treats since she goes through them fairly quickly. The more their is for the amount and price the more likely we pick it up(and of course as long as she eats it).

We picked up Sojo(Good Dog)Chicken Pot Pie Sojo(Good Dog) Apple Dumpling,Merricks Canned Food, and No Grainers.I’ve also wrote out a list of brands of dog food that Natrually Pet carries.Since I found out that Halo’s actually has less chicken than anticipated I am thinking of trying to switch to something else.At the same time, she hasn’t been eating much. Was told that Table Food could be the culprit. At first I ruled that out but now I will admit it could be but is it?I can’t say for sure because even though I have cut back drastically on the amount of table food I feed her she still doesn’t eat much but we’ll see if that’s really the culprit or she just doesn’t need to eat as much as before compared to when she was still growing. We’re slowly finishing up the Beneful as we have got one containor left and that will be the end of Beneful’s by products.

Sojo:
I have looked into the dry food as well including The Honest Kitchen. The food does look good and easy but honestly placing Lacey on Raw Food I don’t think that would work for her. However I may consider some parts of the Raw Food Diet to place her on such as veggies etc maybe like twice a week but to do completely raw I don’t think I’d be open to that unless it’s medically necessary.

Lacey tries Wellness canned dog food:Chicken & Sweet Potatoes

Yesterday we went to the Pet Spot in Ward Warehouse to try get Lacey canned food from Wellness.I wanted to find out is it really the sweet potato and that most of the foods are too rich for her or was it just that specific recipe(Super5Mix for Small Breeds).I got her Chicken & Sweet Potato but before I left the house in the morning I got her organic food ready for her(abt 3 Tablespoons)in case she was hungry.Indeed she was because when I got back the dog food was not close together and so I knew that she ate.She didn’t eat a lot since she probably knew I was coming home and waiting for the good food.I gave her the Chicken & Sweet Potato to see how her tummy reacted.Sure enough her bowel was still on the soft side but not as much as with the dry food from Wellness. My aunty thought it was the table food that did it and I told her no it’s not and she asks how do you know that?I said I just know.As the main person who cares for Lacey I tend to know her reactions to certain things, food, what makes her bark etc more than most people. And I knew that the food I gave her wouldn’t make her bowel soft.Even with organic dog food(Solid Gold) + table food wouldn’t make her bowels too much on the soft side. The second time she made a bowel it was firm and I knew that was from her Solid Gold. She enjoyed the Chicken & Sweet Potato and I do think it’s the Sweet Potato in most of the Wellness foods she can’t have besides the treats. But just to be sure on that next month if we still haven’t found a second brand for her I am going to try the grain free canned dog food from Wellness to see her reaction.

A note on Halo:While Halo is a good reccomended brand for organic dog food they are not efficient when it comes to customer service.I had requested a sample of their adult dog food almost a week ago and it hasn’t came in the mail.I won’t be giving them a call back.We won’t be buying their food either.
Update on Halo Pet Sample:Please see Lacey Sweet Potato Update to find the latest on sampling their food

One thing I learned from organic dog feeding

One thing I’ve learned from organic dog feeding is when you give your dog table food keep it to a small limit for the day.Not to give it a lot of table food because it will make the dog’s poop softer. One day(Saturday during the day) I gave Lacey the amount of table food I used to give her while she was on commercial dog food and her poop was firm, consistent yet slightly on the soft side on Sunday.Figuring it was the table food that did that I limited her to a small portion of table food for the day and the next day(Monday)it was back to usual.Good consistancy, firm. The other thing I learned is that if Lacey misses her dinner which for her is about 10pm or whenever she gets hungry and misses even one day I should give her 1/4 cup of organic dog food to make up for the previous day.Beneful I’ve increased her to 1/4 cup since I don’t put any dry food with it.I do still feed Beneful because it does help her to stay full, more calm and less begging. That’s the main purpose of feeding her Beneful once a day(Lunch).Breakfast is usually vienna sausage, lunch is Beneful, dinner is organic dog food.During the day mainly veggies, fruit and some meat.Organic dog treats and a few by products till it’s used up.Twice a week she gets fed eggs for snack & breakfast.

For this veterinarian, a decided distaste of term ‘people food’

Patty Khuly wrote this as a special for the USA Today
For a great many veterinarians, “people food” is a loaded term — one full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. Nothing, that is, beyond a Madison Avenue-originated, hard-blowing wind kicked up to keep most of us from feeding our pets anything that doesn’t come in a bag, can, box or pouch.

The very concept of “people food” turns my stomach even more than the idea of ingesting what passes for pet food on this continent. It irks even more so knowing that so many of my clients congratulate themselves on their adherence to a “no people food” regimen on behalf of their pets — as if what’s arguably the most highly processed fare on the planet were some kind of exalted ambrosia and feeding its alternatives a version of animal abuse.

Yet when pressed, most of us will allow that the vast majority of so-called “people foods” mirror the very same ingredients we’ve gelled and kibbled into those cans and bags. A meat source, a tuber, a grain, a fruit — these are neither designed for nor dedicated to human consumption alone.

Nonetheless, it’s true that machine-extruded and stewed pet foods revolutionized the ability of humans to more safely and conveniently live with their dogs and cats. To the extent that we understand pet nutrition, manufactured pet diets are designed to be nutritionally balanced to meet their ideal requirements. Moreover, commercial pet foods leave out the foodstuffs we’ve learned can do them harm (grapes, macadamia nuts, etc.).

Problem is, the divide between “pet food” and “people food” has become a wall across which veterinarians, pet food manufacturers and pet owners can no longer communicate freely.

Case(s) in point:

• My clients, who fear “people food” for pets such that they’d prefer to plump up their pets with Pupperonis than follow my recommendations for simple fruit and vegetable substitutions (because it’s “people food”).

• My fellow veterinarians, most of whom fear the legal and safety aspects of recommending non-commercial diets and prefer to stick to foods that are designed by a specialized crew of company nutritionists.

• The pet food industry, which seems to actively trade on fears of “people food,” but whose lax regulatory mechanisms were largely responsible for the 2007 pet food recall (after which thousands of pets were reportedly sickened).

What I’m arguing here, in case I’ve lost you, is that the concept of feeding pets “people food” is ultimately not as black and white as some would have you believe. People food is pet food … and vice versa.

Therefore, owners who choose to feed a wholly or partly non-commercial diet to their pets deserve no accusations of abuse — not as long as the diet is nutritionally balanced, wholesome and free of potential toxins.

As long as pet owners have their pets’ well-being in mind, research their choices, take precautions against gastrointestinal side effects and are mindful of the need to provide a nutritionally complete diet, where’s the harm? After all, we’re not talking about french fries and TV dinners, we’re talking healthy, unprocessed ingredients.

Commonsensical as it may be, however, many veterinarians and the pet food industry as a whole seem to think home cooking for pets a task that requires a PhD in nutrition. They frown on the whole process, preferring we pick processed over fresh at every turn. This, despite exhortations to the contrary when it comes to feeding ourselves and our (human) families.

In a nutshell, that explains why I would be elated to hear the term “people food” leave our vocabulary once and for all. Doing so would serve pet health best, if not because food is food and pets deserve fresh fare, but, ultimately, because pet owners deserve a choice in how they care for all their loved ones.

Pizza Hut Pizza
Oatmeal
Anything with chicken..

Restrictions from Table Food

The only time I reinforce “restriction from Table Food” is when Lacey does NOT eat her own food for at least two full days straight is the only time I will fully renforce complete restrictions from any table food and Lacey knows that when I do this, she will beg like crazy but I refuse to give in then does she realize if I don’t eat my own food I don’t get any table food..Within less than a day she will eat her own food. Then I will allow her to have table food with her own food.I hardly have to reinforce this as she’s pretty good about eating both-Dog Food + Table Food. When I have to I will otherwise she can have both.

Lacey still gets table food but not directly except a few times a day

Lacey still does get table food but not directly given from the plate.Since she figured out the “Food on the plate over a wrap” which is where I would put her dog food on top of a plate that already had “food”referring to table food which was already wrapped..she figured out to get to the table food she had to dig for it…So that was outdone…
Now,the only way she can get table food is by having it chopped up or torn into bits and pieces(not more than 6 small pieces at a time) over her dog food and I make sure that she eats both.If I find out that she is only eating the table food and not her own I automatically stop and bring her food bowl up to the table where I eat.The only other time she gets table food directly from my plate is if I either give it to her which is rarely through the day or if I give it to her on a plate with treats for her that i make on a weekly basis.Other than that she is limited to actual table food.

Search:can maltipoos eat carrots

Yes,maltipoos can eat carrots but according to Lacey she doesn’t care for carrots too much. She will eat it but it’s not her favorite at all.Always try to seek food and treats your maltipoo enjoys and pick their foods(dog food/treats and table food around their favorites)
