Lacey continues her wet food diet for the time being

So we went to the vet not really for a check up but to get some shots aka vaccinations..Little did we know that Dr Kaya didn’t want to do anything until her UTI was cleared up..We saw a different vet who worked at VCA.She is very friendly and does seem knowledgeable but when I asked her as to what type of food should I feed Lacey dry or wet her reply was dry or wet depending how much water she’s taking in.I also asked my Aunty but she told me her dogs never had UTI before.Still she said she’d think dry or wet or combination would be ok.So,I asked on Dogster for other owner’s help as to what to do not to mention this lady vet we saw wasn’t our main vet,Dr Kaya.(Lacey weighs about 7.9 pounds. We think she may be 9 pounds for adult weight)Many owners mention that canned food is the way to go but do brush her teeth about twice a week.We also tried Merrick’s canned food and Lacey loves it.It smells delicious enough for me to eat it!It looks really soupy with chunks of meat inside and more like Halo’s thickness of can food but still not as thick as Wellness where it’s really packed together and compressed of ingrediants. Also the interesting thing about Wellness is the foods are good don’t get me wrong but they could certainly expand their ingrediants of canned food.Perhaps if it was slightly more soupy other dogs and cats may be more open to eating it.That rule seems to work for Lacey very well.Wellness and Halo are both very good brands overall.I like Halo because they have some dehydrated veggies and herbs in the dry food.Wellness is very small when it comes to kibble and that’s a plus..

DiVentus Dog Hotel

So we called Di Ventus to get a verification that it is ok for Lacey to still go there inspite of having a UTI.We called and the staff said that they do take pets even if they have UTI and they also give meds as long as it’s a pill there is no charge.Thought we’d post it in case other dog owners who may be interested in DiVentus Dog Hotel needed to know any type of information.I still feel that Lacey will do well here and taken care of.However due to her UTI she will only be allowed canned food and no dry food whatsoever.Just hope she doesn’t have to be on it longer than a month or she may feel like I don’t have to eat dry food but right now they say it’s better to feed wet food due to the moisture content..A dog owner gotta do what they gotta do to care for their pet.

Lacey’s diet

It seems like she only eats very little at a time perhaps 39 bites of kibble that I put in her 3 water bottles(13 per bottle)to snack on and as for actually how many kibbles she takes in per day I have no idea to be honest.Right now we have got 3 bags of 4 pounds dry dog food waiting at home to be eaten and as little as she has been eating that is not enough for her nutritional needs so I have decided to give her people food at the same amount of dry food I would give her which is up to half cup per day.I make her recipes about once a week, freeze it,refrigerate it and give it to her in amounts she’d get of dog food.Lacey gets some meat, fruits, veggies and things such as yogurt. She’s also got bones/rawhides and treats available to chew and eat through the day. After she does finish one bag of kibble I plan to switch it out to another good brand of organic dog food.I simply can’t force her to eat her kibble and she does have to eat.But I do what I have to do to get her to eat.I always weigh her so she doesn’t get overweight. We’ll see how she does. She seems to be doing ok so far..

Grooming the pup

When I first started grooming Lacey I had to hold her up because she didn’t want me to groom her but eventually I found a way that she would. When she is laying down and very relaxed I’d groom her but I don’t make her stand up anymore. This way there’s no struggle. When I do that with her relaxed she’s so good about grooming. She’ll just stay so still until I am all done. How do other people get their dogs to stay still while they groom?Any ideas?

Lacey’s makes her own walk schedule, who leads etc

Well, everyday she knows that she’s supposed to go walking about 130ish(PST)and once we are outside she shows me where she wants to go.Usually we’ll go to the right and say hi to some dogs in the neighborhood then we will turn around to the left and go that way.On the way pup will stop and do her business in the grass. This goes on for at least about 15-30 minutes. When she wants to go inside she sniffs by our gate. While many experts may disagree that letting your dog lead you is wrong I do remind Lacey for the most part whose in charge. For an ex:If she goes somewhere she shouldn’t be I will tell her firmly No,don’t go in there.Good girl” or a dog barks at her I’d tell her “Never mind the dog.Just turn around..”but if I have to pull on her collar gently more than 5 times we automatically go straight home.If she doesn’t want to walk I will carry her until we are inside the house.I don’t believe in hitting a dog for punishment. If you ask me it’s too severe.Once we are inside the gate she’ll go tell the neighbor’s dog hi again and walk around the yard for a little while.Once she lays down for a bit we usually go inside the house.I always make sure that I hang on her to leash.

Lacey’s Christmas Present & Treat,Waggin’Train

Today we got Lacey her Christmas Present.A aloha top which I will post a picture of later & Waggin’ Train treats!I showed her the new top we picked out for her from Wal Mart and she was excited. Then I showed her the Waggin’ Train treat. Her response:More happy wagging and she was actually pawing at the package and constantly on my leg as if to say “Hurry up already.Let me at it!”I opened the bag to give her one and she sniffed it,licked it a few times and gobbled it up.Our review:Good, tasty, fun and easy to chew.Best of all it’s small.Something that’s very important to her is that her food and treats are small. While she ate her Waggin’ Train Chik N Biscuit her tail was literally wagging for like half a minute.

Lacey’s very first walk

And so the pup signaled to me that she wanted to go on a walk for the very first time….At first she went by the door like she always does when aunty betsy or uncle sherman is outside which means she’ll bark, yelp and wag her tail happily…not today…instead she went to the door and came back but then went right back to the door.So I asked her “Do you want to go out?”a few times..I went and got her collar and showed it to her.Lacey’s response happy wagging. So I put her collar on followed by her leash.Left her in the entry way(inside the house) while I got other things ready like my water and writing a note to my parents..
When we got outside, there was another dog passing by.A smaller dog than Lacey that is.This smaller dog was still yelping and the owner was pulling his dog by the leash.Lacey turns around as if she was going to react but I told her “Never mind,Lacey.Never mind the dog.Just turn around” and she did just that. She didn’t bark at the other dog or anything.I hardly had to pull her on her leash but just as the 10 minutes were finishing up we saw my parents car drive right pass us so I brought her inside. That was Lacey’s very first walk.

A Lacey Medical Update

I am happy & excited to say that although we got Dr Kaya’s message late that our pup,Lacey,is free from giardia & heartworms after she had her blood drawn last month.Dr Kaya mentioned the last time we saw him back in November that they wanted to draw her blood to be sure that the giardia and worms didn’t return.Much to our blessings she’s free from these diseases! Now,it’s been about a month since November 13 2009 since I started Lacey on organic dog food.Hoping her medical conditions and expenses continue to get less as the years go on in her lifetime!

Lacey goes crazy for Halo’s,Wellness canned food/treats

Lacey will literally go crazy for Halo’s food!I showed her the bag and put it on the ground to see what she’d do.She picked it up by her teeth and literally carried the small little package that contained her dry food. She would even paw at the bag, found a way to take the clip off and actually open the bag.I can not imagine how she’d react to the canned food.Lacey would rather have more of Halo’s in her diet than Solid Gold.Believe it or not she’d rather have her food mixed with scraps of leftovers or mixed with canned food but mostly consisting of Halo’s!She will eat Solid Gold maybe like once a day since I give her 1/8 cup of Solid Gold or Halo’s.For Halo’s she can eat up to 1/4 cup a day + 1/8 of solid gold not to mention 1/8 of any good can food.

As for Wellness treats,as soon as she sees the treat her tail starts wagging..and there she goes pawing at you..even can food she loves it!I think if I see a Old Mother Hubbard canned food I might even give that a try.If she likes Wellness she’ll probably like OMH too.

Going back to Halo’s..One thing I noticed in the package of Halo’s was small bits & pieces of dehydrated vegetables and meat.At first I thought it was mispackaging but when I read the review here http://plentyofpuppies.com/puppiesblog/2009/12/halo-dog-food-review.html
it made more sense.Still,Lacey doesn’t care for these dehydrated meat & veggies for some reason. She’ll go straight for the kibble and nothing else.
