Lacey has fully recovered from her UTI taking Genesis Resources Canine Urinary Tract Support. She has full blown energy which is good with the only side effect if anything from taking Genesis Resources Canine Urinary Tract Support might be some sleepiness but other than that she’s been great!Though of course for her,I’d rather have a sleepy dog than a soft poopy dog from regular meds. All the same it works fantastic, gets her right back into her health, and of course the best advantage is no side effects from regular medicine or ,multiple ongoing health issue is another plus for her

Update on Lacey
29 2012:
Lace has been eating PetShape Chicken n Rice treats which she loved a little too much resulting her in getting a UTI on Monday,by Monday night it cleared up.On Wednesday her vulva was red again so we gave her 1/4 tablet of Genesis Resources Canine Urinary Tract Support since it says 1 tablet for a 25 pound dog twice a day.Lacey is only 7 pounds so we’re only giving her 1/4 tablet twice a day at the most.So far it seems to be working well.Although we did have to put it down her throat she swallowed it without a big problem which is good.I think the taste of it had something to do with it too.Check back for an update on the UTI using Genesis Resources Canine Urinary Tract Support later.Been giving her can food,Merricks, which she ate a little of til she walked away which is good.Earlier she wouldn’t touch chicken, she wouldn’t touch beef, she wouldn’t take any of her treats but when I tried can food she took to it.When she refuses all forms of food including can food that’s when I start to worry and if a natural way doesn’t work for her after at least one day’s attempt without any signs of improvement
Update:March 29 2012:Lacey is doing fantastic! We gave her one more pill of the Genesis Resources Canine Urinary Tract Support(1/4 tablet)since her vulva was still a little pink like. You could tell she was feeling so much better…She accepted treats before she went to bed which she refused earlier before she got her medicine last night(see earlier paragraph),she took to chicken later in the early morning hours til she walked away feeling full, she’s full of life, energy, wanting to play, running around the house and back to her usual self!So the medicine works.
Side Note:for those who have small dogs like Lacey when you look for medicine even herbal, holistic, natural medicine for your dog keep in mind when you consider the dosage before you buy,to keep in mind as you consider the doseage, consider the size of your dog, divide that into a smaller amount and see if it wil be workable.Like Lacey for an example the Genesis Resources Canine Urinary Tract Support Uva Ursi is 2010mg.When you divide into 4(Consider2 tablets a day for 25 pound dog and compare that to a small 4-7 pound dog you get a little over 52mg so 104mg in a day)I try to keep it at the lower end of the amount instead of the bigger amount.Don’t neccessarily go for the higher amount like I don’t know 320mg if you know you can give your dog say 50-60 mg and you have a small dog.Consider those factors.I take all of that into consideration before making a purchase on natural medicine for Lacey. It is so important to me as small as she is,how sensitive she is to regular meds, that she is treated holistically first and foremost.I can’t speak for other owners…Every owner/parent has to make their own decision when it comes to their dogs/ human children
A Lacey medical update:Getting an culture:04142010
Last Wednesday Lace got a culture done to check for bacteria growth.I mentioned that she was licking her vulva more. Now that I think about it,it could’ve been from finishing up her UTI.Meanwhile Dr Kaya gave us Octomax to apply to her butt hole.We apply it twice a day. When her results did come back Dr Kaya said it was a staph infection but didn’t want to place her on more meds as much as possible but as long as she’s responding to the ointment & not licking it’s nothing to be concerned about so we are to put Octomax for another week till the 26th.If licking continues we are to call Dr Kaya. She’s not showing major signs of staph so that’s good…
A Lacey medical update:Getting a culture
Today we went to see Dr Kaya for a check up and since she’s been getting recurrent UTI(which I believe is due to heavy grains–Dr Kaya didn’t say it was linked to the grains but I have given the staff an outline from last November til March 2010) Dr Kaya suggested we get an culture done which we will send to the mainland. He doesn’t mention it right away due to cost:cost is running us over $170.00 minus tax!We gave her last dose of Clavamox on Monday morning so we have got to take her back on Wednesday for the culture. I also mentioned that she is licking her vulva & fyi for other owners is to check the base of the tail(lift the dog’s tail and check the base of the tail where the poop comes out & if it’s dirty your dog has been licking. The dirty looking part is moreorless from irritation)
Tips that Dr Kaya shared with us
-Check your dog’s temp
-Look for pain by pressing your dog’s legs, tummy, unusual whimpers/cries/refusing to eat favorite food
-Check the breathing
-feel the tummy
-Smell the ears
-Check the vulva:Is it red?Swollen?
-Check for licking:Check the base of the tail for color ie black
-Vomit
-Cough
-Throw up
-Odd behavior

Another possible UTI??
WELL,IT SEEMS THAT LACEY CAN NOT HAVE ANY GRAIN HEAVY DRY DOG FOOD.IT IS CAUSING HER TO HAVE REPEATING UTI’S..LAST NOVEMBER I PLACED HER ON SOLID GOLD JUST A WEE BIT BEFORE I INTRODUCED HER TO HALO’S.WITHIN ABT A MONTH SHE HAD A UTI.SEE THE DECEMBER BLOGS FOR MORE INFO.JUST MONTHS ON HALO’S HER HEALTH IS FANTASTIC!IN FEBRUARY I RESTARTED HER SG JUST A WEE BIT TO SEE IF IT IS INDEED THE GRAINS..ABOUT A MONTH LATER(ALMOST LEADINGG TO THE SAME DATE IN DECEMBER,DECEMBER 28 2009,A POSSIBLE UTI COULD HAVE STARTED)IF IT IS ANYTHING IT’S IN THE VERY VERY EARLY STAGES…CONTINUOUS LICKING HER VULVA FOR THE PAST TWO DAYS…NOW I HAVE PLACED THE REMAINING OF THE SG JUST A WEE BIT IN THE MERRICKS DRY FOOD TO GIVE THE NEIGHBOR’S DOG.SEEMS SHE DOES BEST ON LOW GRAIN OR GRAIN FREE.PROTEIN LEVEL IS NOT A ISSUE FOR HER.GLAD WE FOUND OUT NOW THAN LATER!NOW SHE’S GETTING CAN FOOD FOR A WHILE.IF IT DOESN’T GET BETTER W/CAN FOOD BY TUESDAY WE’LL TAKE HER IN BUT WE ARE TRYING TO AVOID IT W/ THE EXPENSES OF HER XRAY IN JULY.
UPDATE:AFTER ABT GIVING HER CAN FOOD TWO TIMES SINCE YESTERDAY THE REDNESS DISAPPEARED.I DO BELIEVE THAT 90% OF HER MEDICAL ISSUES WAS LINKED TO SG JUST A WEE BIT.THE MONTHS ON HALO’S HER HEALTH & STILL IS FANTASTIC!BUT AFTER I BROUGHT BACK SG JUST A WEE BIT HEALTH INTO HER ROTATION ISSUES CAME UP AGAIN.EVEN EATING TABLE FOOD AND DECREASING HER CAN FOOD NEVER BROUGHT ON ANY ISSUES.WE CAUGHT IT VERY EARLY ON & TREATED IT AS IF IT WAS A UTI..THERE WAS NO VET ASSISTANCE OR MEDS NEEDED THIS TIME AROUND BUT I WILL TELL DR KAYA IN JULY THAT I’VE SWITCHED HER OFF SG JUST A WEE BIT & PLACED HER ON HALO’S AS THE MAIN DIET ALTHOUGH THERE ARE OTHERS IN HER ROTATION..AT THE MOMENT IT’S HALO’S WHOLESOME CHICKEN/WILD SALMON & EARTHBORN HOLISTIC PRIMITIVE NATURAL..HOPING TO ADD ONE MORE LOW GRAIN OR GRAIN FREE TO THE VARIETY.
Primal is now out….
If you look further back in our posts for December you will find that Lacey had a UTI & one of the home remedies I tried was giving her Apple Cider Vinegar in her water.Back then she wouldn’t take it.Today my dad & I were talking about it and he mentioned it could be something in it that she does not like so I checked out the ingredients and right in front of my eyes I saw the “culprit” Apple Cider Vinegar! And now it is clear why she is refusing Primal. She was happy to receive her Halo’s today and she does accept the dehydrated raw that is inside her Halo’s. So,we are giving the rest of the Primal to our neighbor’s dog who will happily gulp up any type of raw food in front of him or her. Now,we are trying dehydrated raw food from the honest kitchen. We tried it on their website to get samples costing about $1 each(Verve,Force & Preference) to see how Lacey will do.I was thinking if she does well on it we could supplement it in w/her dry food(Halo’s,Solid Gold & Earthborn). While many say to rehydrate it Lacey does well without any rehydration. Many say don’t feed raw with kibble but Lacey shows no signs of difficulty with her bowels on it mixed together. So,it’s either she’ll accept it or will be on dry food/can food for life with supplemental vitamins in her senior years under Dr Kaya’s guidance & possibly switching brands of dry food(not Halo’s though.Halo’s is a keeper for the life of Lacey & any future dogs I may own considering I am looking at future toy poodles)However,in the future of owning toy poodles,I plan on introducing the dogs to Halo’s Spot’s Stew & also various forms of raw(frozen, freeze dried, dehydrated)at a very young age.Pretty much as soon as I get the dog which will be many many far years from now
Lacey UTI update
The good news is that 99% of Lacey’s UTI is gone! There is only maybe 1% less to treat. We don’t have to finish up her medicine for the UTI but Dr Kaya says it’ll be good to finish it up.Yup,just as I thought giving her canned food for the majority of the UTI till I noticed she wasn’t in pain I continued giving her mostly canned food which is when I suspected at least 95% of the UTI was done.Took her in today and Dr Kaya swabbed her vulva, looked under the microscope and announced most of it was gone!I think if i continue canned food for the most part the rest of the UTI should be done by the time we see him next month.Other good news is that Lacey’s heart murmur grade 2 is still good and we don’t have to see a specialist unless over the years it gets worse then we’ll have to consult a specialist. The bad news is Lacey had to get a Bordatella shot through her nose but sadly she vomited twice afterwards.Actually that was one of my fears for her.One thing I told my parents try not to vaccinate her a whole lot as small dogs can only handle so much. The other bad news is that Lacey now has ANOTHER yeast infection in her vulva(her second in less than a year)due to the medication she was given for her UTI.So she’s on another medicine called Ketoconazole 200mg 1/8t once a day for the next month. After that we’ll look into getting her spayed.
The last thing is VCA University Hospital does have boarding and the reason that’s a good thing for us is well we know the doctors/nurses/staff.We’ve built a trust with them to care for Lacey and in case there’s any emergencies the staff will call up the vet right away plus they have her records of her health right there.
Decisions on Lacey’s dog food
We have an appt with Dr kaya to follow up her UTI.Originally when she had her UTI I gave her wet food(tilll she was full) even though this did not come from the vet but through my own research and conversing with other dog owners. When I was sure that her pain and UTI was 95% gone I gave her mostly dry food(Halo’s Spot’s Stew). After I made the appt to see Dr Kaya I am giving her mostly canned food once again just as a quick prevention although her dry food Halo’s(2?pieces) mixed with Earthborn Grain Free(23 pieces) & Bits of Solid Gold(17 pieces) until we can find another dog food.I am thinking of trying her on the Wellness Super5Mix again to see if her tummy can handle it.Like with IAMS when we first brought her home she couldn’t handle it but after a few months she was able to eat it with no problems.Likewise, with Wellness about a month and a half ago was the same thing:Soft bowels. Now,I am wondering if she’ll do better. If she can do better it would be great to have Wellness in our rotation as well. Also probably looking for a grain free dry food too.Already decided long before hand to stick with Halo’s.Now we need another good brand,a grain free and still looking into raw brands as well.Of course,we have canned too.
Lacey’s UTI Follow up with Dr Kaya
Today(Wednesday)I called VCA to schedule a follow up for Lacey regarding her UTI.Her appointment is set for January 28 at 930am(HST).We also plan to get her Distemper & Bordatella. Will be watching for reactions/side effects but hopefully she won’t have any to these immunizations…
Lacey’s update on taking Berry Balance
As many know when we first started Lacey on Berry Balance she was on Solid Gold Just a Wee Bit,which may have played a factor in her UTI along with being part toy poodle..She also took 1/8 t with every meal using canned food but her bowels were still very soft..I emailed another pup’s owner who dealt with UTI with their dog who suggested I keep Lacey on Berry Balance for another week and could be adjusting to it.Otherwise to discontinue using it..Along with that,I’ve been watching her bowels very closely by noticing when she goes to make her poop and look at the texture, size, color, softness then I give her some Wagging’ Train treats(it’s very easy to break apart)in small portions after she makes her poop. Then I give her some food with Berry Balance.Along with that I also give her another piece of waggin’ train with her meal.It seems to be helping because I’ve been doing it this way for the past day to day and a half and her bowels are getting better.I don’t have a set schedule as for the time she gets Berry Balance but typically after she goes and does her bowels I give her a Waggin’ Train followed by food with Berry Balance and another slice of Waggin’ Train wit her meal.I tried to give it to her with dry food but she won’t touch it.
A interesting thought about Lacey:She’ll take water from a doggie bowl but when you put her food in a bowl she won’t touch it.She’ll only take it on a plate.even fish, she won’t eat it in her dry or canned food if it’s listed first but if there’s fish listed further along ie salmon, whitefish, salmon oil etc(not exactly in that order but if some type of fish is listed after something like Beef Tripe,Beef Broth,Turkey,Salmon,Salmon oil…is ok)she’ll eat it.BUT she will eat cooked Salmon,Ahi(especially Ahi we found to be her favorite over Salmon).
