We got Lace some samples from naturally pet but she didn’t eat it.like w/natural balance dry/can food & any dry/can food w/limited ingredients.i’d switch her over to 100% grain free if she ate it as well as her Halo’s!Her stool is excellent on TOTW even w/can food.Halo’s is low in grains…eats it close to a daily basis..medically it helps a lot…both Halo/s & TOTW has good variety ingredients which she’s faithful to…So far we tried Science Diet,IAMS,Beneful,Chicken Soup for the pet lover’s soul, prarie, instinct, stella & chewy, solid gold just a wee bit, wellness, canidae, halo’s(current),earthborn(current),totw(current),nature’s best(refused after once),natural balance(refuses can/dry),merricks(will eat sometimes, loves the can food),primal raw,thk ..when we are in pearl city i plan on trying a few different flavors from blue buffalo to see if she’ll eat it..

“When do you think the Wild Salmon will come for Lacey?”
My response was to my parents”Well,it took them a while {before they got the sample out last year back when they did samples}but it wouldn’t surprise me if it takes a few weeks. It’s coming from Florida but my guesses for the delays are they only do so many shipments per week even for samples{when they used to} & possibly they have less worker than WellPet(Wellness). But it will come eventually. They always do send it out eventually.Maybe not in a timely manner but they get it done either way so don’t be surprised if it doesn’t come this week.”
However, that is one reason we bought Lacey another 4 pound package of Wholesome chicken.Meanwhile I am also giving her SG Just a Wee Bit mixed with Earthborn which she’s doing okay eating it but as for poop unlike last year when I switched her to SG Just a wee bit she did good eating it & her poop was good, firm but since I have placed her on Halo’s & supplementing proteins(Bison)her bowels are soft.We don’t really have other options at the moment.I am looking into other kibble but again what’s on the mainland isn’t always down in HI.We may end up doing more raw but we may look at other kibbles too.
Wellness Super5Mix Complete Wholesome Meal Chicken flavor
Since Lacey is off of her medicine for now I took up her Halo’s and placed 20 pieces of the Wellness Super5Mix Wholesome Meal Chicken flavored in her two bottles for her to try.I am trying to see if she will also have sensitivity to this one or if it’s only the Small Breed due to the amount of fish.If she does our next bet will be that she “won’t be able to handle any of the Wellness dry except canned”,although we could ask for trial bags of a few other options that Wellness has to offer or/and we will order a Castor & Pollux dry food(3 pound bag)online. If we can not find any that will work for her as options are very limited in Hawaii we’ll either do dehydrated raw or do completely homemade cooking which I will have to read up on.I’d hate to take that route but if it must be done as a last resort we’ll look into it.We’ll defiantly see if we can find a good dry food for her. What makes it harder is that majority of the dry food has beet pulp which can cause tear stains in smaller breeds.
Side Effects to Ketoconazole:A call to Dr Kaya on Monday Morning
Recently we took Lacey off the Super5Mix Small Breed and she’s been eating Halo’s for the most part. She does get people food, canned food etc but what’s puzzling me is that even though she’s been off the Small Breed for almost 4 days I would think her bowels would get better(Much firmer and not so much soft, loose formed bowels)but although her bowels has gotten better from when she was on the Small Breed it’s not up to regular standards. One thing that did cross my mind was it could be the Ketoconazole she was having side effects to.For right now she does have to take the medicine but I am going to call up VCA just to let them know what’s going on and if they want us to keep her on the Ketoconazole or try something else. It’s really their call but I think it’s better to let them know how she’s doing with the medicine.
Wellness Super5Mix Small Breed Change of diet..again….
We gave our Wellness Super5Mix Small Breed to my aunty to give to her co-workers at work because I seriously doubt Lacey’s bowels are going to get better on the Small Breed but I don’t want to give up hope on using Wellness’ products for her yet until we have tried literally every option Wellness has to offer us before we try Castor & Pollux lines of dog food. While I am fairly optimistic that Castor & Pollux will 90% agree with her I’d like to give Wellness more than one chance if by any means even if it takes a year to try every dry food line that they have before we come across something that works.Meanwhile,I am going to calll Wellness to see what they suggest we try next for Lacey.Otherwise depending on what they say I am thinking of trying the Lamb,Barley & Salmon Meal next. But,we’ll see what Wellness has to say tomorrow. In the mean time Lacey is back on Halo’s 100% by itself with nothing else added at the moment.I hope to try add something else to the mixture soon.
Email Response from Castor & Pollux
We have received an email response from Castor & Pollux regarding “Samples of dog food”.Here’s what they said:
We have two unique lines of dog foods – Organix, our certified organic line of dry and canned food and treats that’s made in compliance with the USDA’s National Organic Program, and Natural Ultramix, our natural option that features a minimum of five meat-based protein sources and real fruits/veggies blended with the kibble. All of our formulas are developed by our PhD Animal Nutritionist to be complete and balanced. They taste great too!
Organix offers the benefits of being a certified organic food along with outstanding palatability and digestibility. In fact, the #1 ingredient in Organix dry formulas is certified organic, free range chicken – the same that you’d buy for yourself at your local natural food store! Under the USDA’s National Organic Program, each and every ingredient in Organix must be reviewed and approved by the organic certifying agency for inclusion in Organix. From the field and farm through to the handling, processing and manufacturing of Organix, each step must be certified organic. This extremely rigorous regulatory program is not applicable to pet foods that are natural, holistic or human grade. For more information on what it means to be certified organic, please visit our website (www.castorpolluxpet.com) and click on Your Questions to be taken to the link.
Natural Ultramix is our natural option for pet parents who are not quite ready to go organic. Natural Ultramix provides a high meat-based protein diet that’s highly bioavailable along with the natural benefits of real pieces of fruits and veggies blended with the kibble. From a product safety standpoint, ALL of our Natural Ultramix and Organix products are tested for melamine and cyanuric acid, salmonella and other toxins BEFORE they are released for sale.
I do apologize we do not have samples of our dog formulas at this time, but here’s how easy it is to try Organix and Natural Ultramix – all of our products are unconditionally guaranteed. If you or your dog are not entirely satisfied, just call or e-mail us. We’ll refund your purchase or send you a replacement product right away – you don’t need to go back to the store! I can send coupons to you too; if you would like to provide me with your address information, we’ll put them in the mail right away!
Thank you for being such a wonderful pet parent! We are a small, family company that is committed to providing safe, healthy, natural and organic products for dogs and cats. We’re all pet parents ourselves and take this commitment very, very seriously.
I have emailed them for coupons of the dog food just in case we need a back up for Lacey.I mentioned right now we are between trying different brands for Lacey and it would be helpful if we got a coupon as a back up.
Note:So far Castor & Pollux is the only other line I have okayed besides Halo’s & Wellness.I will consider other options but would like to try Wellness first & then Castor & Pollux even if it means ordering it online.I did get a response from Wellness and am considering calling them tomorrow just to see what their input is before we return the bag to try the Lamb,Barley and Salmon from their Super5Mix line.
Update:regretfully,we couldn’t find the receipt for The Pet Spot where we got Wellness Super5Mix Small Breed but I do believe it is the amount of fish that was causing her soft bowels.I am very sad to give up on the Wellness Super5Mix Small Breed but I have to do what is best for Lacey not myself. After all,she is the one eating the dog food not me!
Possible Idea for Wellness Core Small Breeds???
Seems like one person on twitter has tweeted to wellness about a idea for Wellness Core Small Breeds.Sounds like an excellent idea!Maybe if wellness gets enough requests from people they will make a Wellness Core for Small Breeds!Follow wellness on twitter @http://twitter.com/wellnesspetfood

Lacey continues her wet food diet for the time being
So we went to the vet not really for a check up but to get some shots aka vaccinations..Little did we know that Dr Kaya didn’t want to do anything until her UTI was cleared up..We saw a different vet who worked at VCA.She is very friendly and does seem knowledgeable but when I asked her as to what type of food should I feed Lacey dry or wet her reply was dry or wet depending how much water she’s taking in.I also asked my Aunty but she told me her dogs never had UTI before.Still she said she’d think dry or wet or combination would be ok.So,I asked on Dogster for other owner’s help as to what to do not to mention this lady vet we saw wasn’t our main vet,Dr Kaya.(Lacey weighs about 7.9 pounds. We think she may be 9 pounds for adult weight)Many owners mention that canned food is the way to go but do brush her teeth about twice a week.We also tried Merrick’s canned food and Lacey loves it.It smells delicious enough for me to eat it!It looks really soupy with chunks of meat inside and more like Halo’s thickness of can food but still not as thick as Wellness where it’s really packed together and compressed of ingrediants. Also the interesting thing about Wellness is the foods are good don’t get me wrong but they could certainly expand their ingrediants of canned food.Perhaps if it was slightly more soupy other dogs and cats may be more open to eating it.That rule seems to work for Lacey very well.Wellness and Halo are both very good brands overall.I like Halo because they have some dehydrated veggies and herbs in the dry food.Wellness is very small when it comes to kibble and that’s a plus..
Lacey gets a bag of Halos & other treats
Today we went to Whole Foods to pick up Lacey’s Halo’s Spot’s Stew Wholesome Chicken. We also picked up some can food.Originally I was going to pick up canned food from the Halo’s line(Salmon & Beef) but I only saw the salmon so we ended up picking up the Salmon (from Halo) & 1 Whitefish & Sweet Potato & 1 Turkey & Sweet Potato(Wellness).Wellness canned food is about 12.5 oz for $5.69 at Whole Foods. As a comparison,The Pet Spot sells Wellness Canned Food for almost half that price(~$2.30).I also picked up Earth’s Best Baby Food 2 containers of Chicken & Sweet Potato. From Safeway we got Lacey pig skin that is flavored on the inside with sweet potato. http://hartz.com/Hartz_Products/Dog_Products/Treats_and_Chews/3270099335_hartz_oinkies_pig_skin_twists_treats_for_dogs.aspx
It is actually better than the previous one I got her which is chicken flavored on the outside and bacon on the inside also from Hartz.

This one had artificial coloring but the pig skin doesn’t.Some people suggest giving your dog bullysticks but the history behind is disgusting and I don’t think I’d like Lacey eating something like that.Of course to her it’s nothing. After all of Lacey’s Beneful runs out if she likes the canned foods I’ve picked I am planning on discontinuing the Beneful since it does have by products and I am trying to get her on as natural as possible.
Earth’s Best:Whole Food:Regular price:$1.09 Sale price:$.99
Safeway: Regular price:2.25
Down to Earth: Regular price:$1.29
When I came home I realized I only needed one jar of baby food but Lacey can eat it as a meal too along with her regular dry food that is.
Lacey goes crazy for Halo’s,Wellness canned food/treats
Lacey will literally go crazy for Halo’s food!I showed her the bag and put it on the ground to see what she’d do.She picked it up by her teeth and literally carried the small little package that contained her dry food. She would even paw at the bag, found a way to take the clip off and actually open the bag.I can not imagine how she’d react to the canned food.Lacey would rather have more of Halo’s in her diet than Solid Gold.Believe it or not she’d rather have her food mixed with scraps of leftovers or mixed with canned food but mostly consisting of Halo’s!She will eat Solid Gold maybe like once a day since I give her 1/8 cup of Solid Gold or Halo’s.For Halo’s she can eat up to 1/4 cup a day + 1/8 of solid gold not to mention 1/8 of any good can food.
As for Wellness treats,as soon as she sees the treat her tail starts wagging..and there she goes pawing at you..even can food she loves it!I think if I see a Old Mother Hubbard canned food I might even give that a try.If she likes Wellness she’ll probably like OMH too.
Going back to Halo’s..One thing I noticed in the package of Halo’s was small bits & pieces of dehydrated vegetables and meat.At first I thought it was mispackaging but when I read the review here http://plentyofpuppies.com/puppiesblog/2009/12/halo-dog-food-review.html
it made more sense.Still,Lacey doesn’t care for these dehydrated meat & veggies for some reason. She’ll go straight for the kibble and nothing else.
