Lacey yeast infection in right ear 5-17 to 5-29-2012

Lacey had Zymox applied to her ear once a day for 1 week then it was cleared up

Lacey Princess yeast infection in ear(2nd yeast infection since 2009)

Yesterday we found out that Lacey had a yeast infection in her right ear.It was warm,a little crusty and she itched it.It didn’t require vet assistance though. We used white vinegar and water then used a qtip to swab her ear.We did this one time last night. We also ordered a yeast infection medicine(holistic of course)from naturalpets.com
3 PACK Zymox (1.25oz) Hydrocortisone Free
This was at the knowledge and recommendation from Natural rearing owners/breeders of dogs.
Lace is doing better. Her yeast infection was due to Pa not cleaning her ears or rather being lazy instead of putting her herbal ear medicine into her ear directly every week(Currently using Halo’s Herbal ear cleanse)he has been doing that every other week and the other week wiping the ear flap with cotton ball using the Halo’s Herbal ear Cleanser during which he put the Herbal Ear Cleanser into her ear every week prior to that she hasn’t had a yeast infection in her ears for years already.

Vet Visit update with Dr Kaya on Feburary 10,2010

We took Lacey to see Dr Kaya early this morning and all the white cells are gone.No bacteria of a yeast infection BUT there is new bacteria which could heal on its own but if it is still there next Tuesday when Lacey gets spayed we’ll have her on antibiotics for it.He said it could be hormonal and spaying could take care of it.Also got her some motion sickness meds to see if it works.Other than that the Ketoconazole can be stopped.Nothing else new.She weighs 7.6 pounds at the vets. Was 7.4 the last time I weighed her.According to Dr Kaya’s records she can be anywhere from 7.4-8 pounds.Anywhere from 7.4-8.0 is normal for her.Appetite is good, activity is good, exercise is good.

Lacey’s medical update:Stool update & yeast infection update

A few weeks ago,we took Lacey to see Dr Kaya for an update on her UTI presumably from Solid Gold Just a Wee Bit(Lots of grains)and we were told she now has a yeast infection. We just got her off the Wellness Super5Mix Small Breed which had too much fish and caused soft stools.around the same time we took her back to Dr Kaya and he prescribed her Ketoconazole 1/8 tablet for 32 days.Meanwhile while she was taking it every day(with a struggle)she was also having soft stools for about a week. After a week of this we called up Dr Kaya to see if it could be the medicine and we switched it to every other day.The days she didn’t take her medicine her stools were better:More firm, consistent, good color. The days she did take it her stools became more soft but a little more firm with rice per Dr Kaya.
When we did call up Dr Kaya today(February 8)he said it is possible if the yeast infection is gone we could stop her medicine rather than continue for the rest of the days.We do have an appt with Dr Kaya on Wednesday February 10 2010 at 830am(HST) to see how she is doing with her yeast infection.Meanwhile,so far on Halo’s there has been no medical complications YET and we are hoping that there will be none!

Lacey UTI update

The good news is that 99% of Lacey’s UTI is gone! There is only maybe 1% less to treat. We don’t have to finish up her medicine for the UTI but Dr Kaya says it’ll be good to finish it up.Yup,just as I thought giving her canned food for the majority of the UTI till I noticed she wasn’t in pain I continued giving her mostly canned food which is when I suspected at least 95% of the UTI was done.Took her in today and Dr Kaya swabbed her vulva, looked under the microscope and announced most of it was gone!I think if i continue canned food for the most part the rest of the UTI should be done by the time we see him next month.Other good news is that Lacey’s heart murmur grade 2 is still good and we don’t have to see a specialist unless over the years it gets worse then we’ll have to consult a specialist. The bad news is Lacey had to get a Bordatella shot through her nose but sadly she vomited twice afterwards.Actually that was one of my fears for her.One thing I told my parents try not to vaccinate her a whole lot as small dogs can only handle so much. The other bad news is that Lacey now has ANOTHER yeast infection in her vulva(her second in less than a year)due to the medication she was given for her UTI.So she’s on another medicine called Ketoconazole 200mg 1/8t once a day for the next month. After that we’ll look into getting her spayed.
The last thing is VCA University Hospital does have boarding and the reason that’s a good thing for us is well we know the doctors/nurses/staff.We’ve built a trust with them to care for Lacey and in case there’s any emergencies the staff will call up the vet right away plus they have her records of her health right there.

Lacey update

At 30 weeks old Lacey got her first heat. For the past few days we were trying to figure out what was wrong with her as she didn’t eat a lot of her food.In fact, she ate less than what she normally eats <1/8 cup.She would snack here and there but wouldn't eat as much. Also noticed her personality was there but somewhat subdued.About a week ago,we noticed that she was licking her vulva a lot so I posted questions on Dogster asking about this and we thought it was a UTI,Yeast Infection,Dirt or possibly getting into heat.We noticed her vulva was black around the area. We thought it was blood so after we wiped her vulva we took hydrogen peroxide with a qtip to see if it was blood but it wasn't.Dirt? We gave her a bath and it's cleaner now but when we looked closer at the vulva we noticed some swelling and immediatly after that we knew she was in heat. Now we know why she's been the way she has been the past few days..Next month we will ask Dr Kaya at VCA Animal Hospital about her being spayed.By then she would have just turned 8 months old.We may have to get a pack of diapers to put on her duing this time so she doesn't spot around the house. We'd hate to confine her again…..

Aside from Lacey starting her heat….she has graduated in 3 1/2 months from putting tape all around her mat for potty,to about an inch of tape on each corner of her mat,to only 2 corners needing tape,to no tape at all as of Saturday night!

Also reintroducing Lacey to the NurtoMax Puppy Biscuits and she is getting used to the Milkbone..Today(saturday) she ate 2 half biscuits =1 biscuit of milkbone.I put it inside her KONG and she is obviously eating it more now..

Tricks wise…She's learning how to lay down, not running outside, sit, sit & stay meaning of don't move, standing on her hind legs, sort of identifying the word vienna sausage and the can of vienna sausage, vaccum…

Eating wise:The past two days since Thursday she wouldn't eat a lot…I tried giving her hamburger today(Saturday)but she just ate the hamburger..but when I gave her some of the mcdonald chicken that is when she ate both-her food +pieces of chicken. She was waiting for the chicken. This dog will do anything for chicken even if it means to go hungry!

Our fear for Lacey

A few nights ago we had a scare for dear pup.We have noticed lately that she has been licking her vulva area and it’s looking black. At first we thought it could be several things:1)Urniary tract infection 2)Yeast Infection 3)Dirt 4)Heat.When we cleaned it with water and on a piece of cardboard we took hydrogen peroxide to see if it would sizzle(the black stuff) to see if it was blood. My mom was a lab tech so she knows about this stuff.Anyways it didn’t sizzle which meant that it was not blood. We think it’s just dirt but if it does not come out clean on Saturday when we give Lacey a bath and there’s no improvement with her licking we are considering on calling Dr Kaya so he can check it out.For now, she’s great.Full of pep but not as active as before. We think she’s going to be one of the maltipoos that calm down as she gets older.I do think that Lacey does understand most of what we are telling her.People say dogs don’t understand what we tell them but I believe that there are a few exceptions to that rule.Honestly!

From July 29,2009:Lacey’s yeast infection

Lacey’s yeast infection is getting better.Tonight we cleaned her ears as her vet instructed and the color is pretty clear.A few more days till Monday when the ear drops is done.Surprisingly she was still and not squirming when my dad was cleaning her ears.Lacey’s doing well.Still needs to work on her poop for potty training but otherwise is doing well with potty training. She’s getting there though.

From July 28,2009:Lacey gets a new collar

Yesterday Lacey got a new collar. One that she cannot bite. It’s a green one so it will match the house colors. She’s doing better with her potty training and is now up to 4 biscuits a day. Before she got less than 3 a day so she’s trying and if she keeps doing well she may be out of the dining area on Saturday.Still getting her ear drops till next Monday for her yeast infection.

From July 23,2009:Lacey takes her worm medicine like a good girl!

Tonight we gave Lacey her new worm medicine Pyrantel and she took it like a good girl. Her medicine must have tasted good like vanilla because as soon as my dad shot it in her mouth she wanted more.lol.However her yeast infection is worse in one of her ears because she tends to move around more. She’s doing good otherwise. My mom and I take primary care of Lacey and share the responsibilities.A typical day would go something like this:

6-7:00am:My mom feeds her usually but if she is not up by then I feed Lacey her breakfast.

6:30am-7:00am:I eat breakfast and spend time with Lacey for about 30 minutes.

7:00am-7:30am:Spend time with Lacey

7:30am-9:00am:I watch tv in the day area, check my email and periodically go near the dining area to console Lacey

9:00am-11:00am:Out doing errands with my dad

11:00am-12:00pm:Lunchtime for me and Lacey.I get Lacey’s lunch ready and spend about a half hour with her after I am done with lunch.Periodically I will praise her if she goes potty and spend time with her

12:00pm-2:30pm:Watching tv,check on Lacey, spend time with Lacey for usually about half hour at a time

2:30pm-4:55pm:Check on Lacey, console her, play with her by holding her and giving her some love

4:55pm:I take down her food to see if she’s hungry then I know to prepare her meal.

5:00pm:Lacey gets her meal and I have her sit and stay for at least 3 seconds before she gets her dinner bowl.

5:05pm-5:30pm:I eat dinner and spend some time with Lacey till 6pm

6:00pm-7:00pm:mom comes home and takes over with lacey.Mom spends time with Lacey in the evening

7:00pm-8:00pm:Medicine time.Lacey does not like it at all.

8:00pm-8:30pm:Time with Loreen for Lacey

8:30pm-10:00pm:Check on Lacey every so often

10:00pm-12:00am:I check on her every so often and I check for water before I go to bed

Lacey knows how to say when she wants up to go on a lap:She lifts her front paws as if to say “up please”

Lacey knows she needs to sit and stay for about 3 seconds before she gets her food

Lacey enjoys being brushed about 4 times a day

Lacey knows how to say I’m hungry:She sniffs around the dog food and sometimes claws at the bag to identify”I’m hungry”

Update as of August 17,2009:Lacey can shake hands and stand.Lacey is able to dance.Lacey can also tell you when  she needs more water. She will push her water bowl around or push it with her nose to let us know she needs water.
